    Remote downgrade!
    4 Stars
    Remote downgrade!
I bought the original Roku 3 (my first Roku) on Amazon the day it came out and have been using it happily for over two years. During this time, I have become a Roku evangelist for three main reasons:1. Unified search.2. Roku was independent and not pushing its own content.3. The Roku 3 remote was amazing and the best of all the competition (Apple TV remote = Absolute garbage, Fire TV Stick = Much better than Apple TV's remote, Original Roku 3 Remote = The best). The Roku's remote didn't rely on IR, was very ergonomic, and had a headphone port that I used fairly often.About two weeks ago, my brother and sister-in-law were complaining that the streaming on their old Blu-ray player was bad, and their PS3 wasn't working well. I fixed their PS3's streaming, but told them that a Roku 3 would offer a night-and-day better streaming experience for them. As the Roku 3 seemed ripe for an update, I told them I'd let them know when it was refreshed. Fast forward two weeks later and the "new" Roku 3 came out. Upon seeing the first three Amazon reviews, and watching a video review, my sister-in-law and I Amazon Primed two new Roku 3's. Reviews said the Roku 3 was noticeably faster, and the voice search worked pretty well. While the new Roku 3 would be a minor upgrade for me, it was enough for me to finally move my existing Roku 3 into my bedroom.Fast forward again to yesterday. Our two Rokus arrived, and my sister-in-law also gave birth to my new niece. After coming home from the hospital, I immediately installed my new Roku 3 where the old one had been, and moved the old Roku to my bedroom. This is where things started going downhill.Upon configuring my new Roku, the first thing I noticed was that the directional pad on the new remote had different "physical travel" than the pad on my old remote. When using the new remote, it feels like my thumb pad hits the remote's plastic housing before the directional pad is fully clicked. When looking at a side-by-side of the old and new Roku 3 remote (I uploaded a picture), you can see that the old directional pad is a millimeter or so more raised than the one on the new remote. At this point you might be thinking I'm obsessive (maybe I am), but the difference in click feeling is obvious to me, and I think the new directional pad feels inferior compared to the one on the old remote. Am I making this issue bigger than it needs to be? I don't think so. The two main things I do with my Roku 3 are click the buttons on the remote, and watch videos on my TV. Compared to the experience using my previous Roku 3's remote, my clicking buttons experience has been downgraded.Moving on. Like some other reviewers mentioned, I also noticed the remote's "tail" wrist band was missing. One reviewer mentioned that gaming was difficult without it. Other than running Angry Birds for 30 seconds when I first got my Roku, I haven't once gamed on it. That said, I miss the tail for another reason. The tail made the Roku remote almost twice the size as it is without the tail. If you were sitting a few feet from your Roku remote, I could often grab the wrist band and pull the remote towards me. It was also useful when pulling the remote out of a tray of remotes. You might not see the small Roku remote buried in a pile of stuff, but if you saw the wrist band, you could just pull on it and retrieve your remote. Try doing that with the little purple Roku tab that took the place of the tail. Overall, the lack of the wrist band is a small but notable downgrade. Finally, I'm going to put three complaints into this paragraph. On the new remote, the "replay" button or whatever others are calling it has been replaced by the voice search. While the voice search is a nice feature, Roku should have figured out a way to get the button on the remote without removing what seems to be a beloved button. Second, the Netflix, Amazon, Rdio, and hulu buttons are too close to the rewind, fast forward, and play/pause buttons. This morning, I was trying to rewind a documentary I started on HBOGO, and I accidentally clicked the Amazon button instead of play/pause or fast forward. Suffice to say that was REALLY annoying. I had to return to the home screen, re-open the kind of junky HBOGO app, then re-search for the documentary I had been watching (I didn't immediately see a "recently watched" section in the app. Lastly, the quick launch buttons on the remote should be reprogrammable. If someone is never going to use Rdio or hulu, or uses them infrequently, he or she should be able to program the buttons to open something else. I don't know if content providers paid Roku to label those four buttons the way they are, or if Roku just did that because those are the most propular services. I'm hesitant to believe the choice was a non-monetary decision, because do people actually use Rdio? It might have been nice if those four buttons were red, green, yellow, and blue and were totally programmable. The quick launch buttons do not exist on my original Roku 3 remote, and while potentially useful, are annoyingly placed. Now, onto the only plus I see about the new Roku 3 remote: the headphone jack is no longer recessed so you don't need to use an adapter if your headphone plug is kind of thick. In the words of Beyonce, lemme lemme upgrade yuh!In summary, in my opinion, the new Roku 3 is not a worthwhile upgrade if you already have the original Roku 3. If you have no Roku, the new or old Roku 3 is likely better than what you're currently using. However, you now have a tough decision whether to buy the two-year-old Roku 3, or the new one with a worse remote. I'm not sure if the new Roku 3 actually has new internals (some say it does, other say it doesn't), and I'm not sure if the quicker app launching is a placebo. Even if the new Roku 3 is quicker, the original Roku 3 was no slouch. In many ways, the Roku 3 was so good that it seems like the biggest way Roku could improve it (short of adding 4k or voice support) is by improving the software. Unfortunately, I don't think the new feed feature is that notable of an improvement, and the remote is a step back. As one reviewer noted, it seems like Roku's development efforts have become stagnant, and this new update is kind of a joke.I'm going to do some soul searching over the next few days and decide if I'm going to keep the new Roku 3. It's nice to have a second unit, and I still prefer the new Roku 3 over the competition, but I like it less than my original Roku. The refreshed Roku 3 should be better, especially two years after the original Roku 3. In the meantime, I'm paranoid that my brother and sister-in-law aren't going to love their new Roku 3 remote. I won't say it's worse than my 2-year-old remote, but I'll know.

A pesar de ser reconstruido esta en muy buen estado, sin ninguna queja al contrario esta súper tal y como lo pedí. Lo único malo fue que estafeta tiene cobertura donde vivo y hay que ir a buscarlo.
