Dead Rising was originally released as a Microsoft exclusive for the Xbox 360 back in 2006.Since then, the series has had a truly bizarre release pattern, seeing both versions of the sequel – Dead Rising 2 and Dead Rising 2: Off the Record – released on 360 and PS3, but returning to Microsoft as a console exclusive for Dead Rising 3 on Xbox One. Dead Rising 4 releases as a timed exclusive for Xbox One in December, but will come to PC a few months later and PS4 within a year.Confused yet? It’s the 10 Year Anniversary of the release of Dead Rising, and to celebrate, Capcom has released current gen ports of the last gen entries in the series. This marks the first time that the original Dead Rising has been released anywhere but Xbox 360, and the final result is sort of a mixed bag.On the one hand, the game runs at 1080p and maintains a near-solid 60 frames per second. I perceive just a little bit of slow down during the more combat-intensive horde sections, but it’s infrequent and harmless. The reason the game manages to run so smoothly is because very little has been done to beef up the textures or draw distances; some textures and shadows still flicker at a distance (it’s especially noticeable during the game’s opening cut scene set in a helicopter) and there are definitely textures that are just plain ugly to look at. The character models occasionally look a bit like paper mache, so the Uncanny Valley is on full display here.Graphical presentation isn’t the only place the game shows its age. Because this is a remastered port and not a remake, all the little quirks and hiccups from the original remain. The aiming of guns still feels laborious – although the step up to 60 fps prevents it from feeling quite so sluggish – hit detection with melee weapons is a little strange, and the A.I. for survivors remains pig dumb. I still take great pleasure in listening to them scream “FRAAAANK!” at the top of their lungs, but man it gets frustrating trying to maneuver them through a crowded horde. For those of you who played Dead Rising 2 or 3 but never the original, something to be aware of is this game’s lack of a crafting system. This is an element that wasn’t introduced until the sequel, so when you play Dead Rising, what you find laying around is what you get. Fortunately, there’s a wide variety of melee weapons to choose from, and there are items which can increase the power of your preferred attack type by quite a bit if you dig deep enough into the mall's hidden nooks to find them. For those of you who have never played a Dead Rising game, something to be aware of is the game's save system. Being 10 years old, it relies entirely upon manual saves. There is no auto save feature whatsoever; no checkpoint system. You can only save at the bench in the safe room or at the various bathrooms scattered around the mall. It's a little reminiscent of the typewriter save system from the early Resident Evil games. If you don't want to lose your progress, always return to a save spot before closing the game.In terms of extras, this release is content identical to the original 2006 game. Amazon is promoting the game as including DLC costumes, but Dead Rising was released before DLC was commonplace. There was no additional content released for this game. I presume the Amazon listing is referring to the DLC costumes that are included with Dead Rising 2 and Off the Record, neither of which is available at retail just yet (Dead Rising 2 releases on September 27th, while Off the Record has yet to be announced for retail release).(CORRECTION: I've been informed in the comments that there were, in fact, DLC costumes for Dead Rising that were unlocked with "downloaded special keys". After doing some hunting, I discovered that they do actually exist, and were offered as free DLC by Capcom on the Xbox Marketplace in late 2006. Despite having owned the game for a number of years, they somehow flew under my radar. With thanks to James E. Lindsey for the correction.)If you buy the games as a triple pack digitally, you will get all the DLC costumes from the sequels, but none of the episodic DLC that was released to bridge the gap between Dead Rising 1 and Dead Rising 2. I don’t know why Capcom chose to include none of this content on any of the discs or in the digital bundle, but that’s how it is.If you’ve never played Dead Rising, now is your chance. The arcade-style gameplay is a little archaic but the loop of mass zombie slaughter is still an all-round good time. If you’re waiting for Dead Rising 4’s eventual PS4 release, you could do a lot worse than exploring the game that pioneered the sandbox zombie brawler.

5.0 out of 5 stars Un gran juego que sigue siendo bueno a pesar de los años
Reviewed in Mexico on January 18, 2017
