The game is very simple. You run, jump, hit and evade. But it is one of the funniest games I have ever played. What does it mean then, when a game is so simple, but you get such a special feeling when playing? It means the game is just plane fun. There are things you have to think about when you are looking at a game. Important things. How are the controls? What are the graphics like? How is the voice acting? How into the entire atmosphere do you get? Finally, is it enjoyable? My answer to all of these questions is a 110% yes! Everything feels so well done. I can move around easily, jump, hit and just get out of the way of an attack in time. The voice acting is some of the best I have ever heard. That goes not just for games. I set it on hard and many times, I have to do something multiple times to survive a level. I realized that I had gotten lost in the game. I got my first trophy. That was exciting. I just started playing this game. But, I know it will be one of my favorites. One of the best launch games I have ever played, one of the funniest, thought stealing games I have ever played. I am so lucky to have picked this game up. Ignore the bad reviews, do yourself a favor and pick this game up.
Some other cool stuff about this game are, one is the slow motion. At times, when you are fighting, everything will slow down and you will see yourself hit the enemy. It is really cool. Second, when you get stuff and build up your character, it actually makes you feel more powerful. I bulked myself out a bit and sat there super happy that my character was stronger. Then I knocked the heck out of some enemies. When I saw the cut scenes and played the game, (I know there may be some interesting things said about this) I felt like I was playing an iPad game. Lately, I have gotten so into games on that device. Everything looks so clean and neat. That is how this game looks. It looks fantastic. I was playing over my grandparents and everything disappeared. That means the game took me away from everything else. Great game.
I forgot to mention something. Collectables! In each level, there are collectables. Some are easy to see. You can see the door that will lead you to them. But others are harder. Some levels, when you first start, you have to run backwards and you enter another area. Sometimes you have to go around hitting the walls. Maybe one will crumble and treasure will be inside.
Something else I just found out I can do. You can pick stuff up and throw it at enemies. Right now, the only thing I have picked up has been these tank enemies. You hit them until they die, hit square and throw them at the other enemies. Also, one you get enough power, you can use what I guess is magic. You can hit a button to power up, then hit it again and take out one or more enemies. All this happens without slowing anything down.
New stuff to say. OK, something that some may get annoyed at is this. When going through a level, if you die at the end, you will restart back at the very beginning of the level. Some of the treasure is gone since you already got it, while the stuff that give you more power is still there. But this is one of those games. You can learn by restarting. I learn which enemy to take down first, or how to survive and enemy by learning it's pattern. Another cool thing about the restarting at the beginning is this, whatever energy you get while going through the level, stays with you. So, say you are having a though time with a group of enemies. Well, the more time you die, the more your energy will go up. Thus allowing you to eventually use an attack that can take them all down at once. It has helped me more than once. Another cool this is using your elements. I guess that is what I will call them. You get a different one every now and then. I got wood. So, you break the wood piles and it goes to your body making you bigger and stronger. There was a part I could not get it. It had wood in front of it. Then, my body caught on fire. It burned like a fire place. Well, I went back to the wood that was blocking the treasure and it caught on fire!!!! Thus opening the door and allowing me to get to the one blocked treasure.
Super fun. When I am playing and finished playing this game, I feel like I did when I got my Playstation way back when. This is the first time I have felt like that. Like I have never played a game before. Damn it's fun!!!!
Combat -- The combat is very simple (not too many buttons to choose from), yet effective. There are two attacks to choose from (punching and a jump attack). Punching is the easiest of the two to execute, and works on just about every enemy. The jump attack can be executed by jumping in the air and pressing the attack button, which results in Knack launching himself at the enemy. There's no block button, but you do have the ability to dodge incoming attacks. I've read several complaints in regards to Knack's dodging ability being subpar, but that's simply not true. Just like with any game, you have to time your dodge -- nothing unreasonable about that. On the surface, the combat appears to be simplistic, but don't be fooled. You can't get by with repeatedly pressing the 'punch' button because the enemies move around quite a bit, and you'll find yourself swinging at thin air.
Weaponry -- Knack is one of those rare games that doesn't have any weapons (a breath of fresh air). However, you'll be able to use three types of super powers, and that's the closest you'll get to weaponry. You unlock all of them around the same time, so you'll have them from start to finish. The one I used the least was the earthquake one. Not that it wasn't effective, but the last game I played (God of War 2) had a similar power, and I was sick of it. Knack is primarily a melee type of game, but even a game like Knack needs at least one ranged attack, and thankfully one of the super powers allows for that. With the ranged attack, you'll be able to shoot relics at enemies, and knock them out with one blast. As always, I saved my favorite for last. The third super power is a tornado comprised of relics (Knack himself)and you'll leave wreckage in your path! It's important to note that the super powers need to be replenished after each use, so don't go in thinking you'll be able to use these powers over and over.
Enemies -- Definitely the strength of the game! It's been a very long time since I've played a game with so many different enemy types. Each chapter brings a fresh batch of enemy types, and I don't understand why more games don't do this. A variety of enemies makes the game feel 'fresh', and I'm always looking forward to what kind of enemies I'll see next. There aren't too many boss battles, but the few that ARE in the game are fun. The enemies pose a challenge because they're very unpredictable. For example; in most games I've played, I can memorize the bad guys' timed attacks pretty quickly (punch, punch, pause; etc). That's not the case in Knack: You might see punch, punch, pause; then punch, punch, punch, pause! In other words, it's pretty random, and that makes it challenging.
Miscellaneous -- On average, it's probably a 13 hour game, and I feel that's the proper length. Knack is a linear, fixed path type of game, and that doesn't bode well for some people. Although there's not any exploration, you can still find collectables behind hidden doors. These 'hidden doors' are often hiding in plain sight, you just have to pay attention. You puzzle lovers will be disappointed because there are no puzzles, period. Well, the closest thing to a puzzle is trying to figure out how to get past a set of trip wires, but I don't count that.
I hope I don't come off as a fanboy, but I don't have anything negative to say about Knack. Many people are hoping for an open world game in Knack 2 (assuming there will be a sequel) but I'm not sure that's a good idea. I think these people are wanting Knack to follow in the footsteps of the Jak and Daxter series, and I KNOW that's not a good idea!!! No further comment on that... Infamous: Second Son, you're up next!
