Unlike some music you listen to after not having heard it for a few years and wonder how you tolerated it let alone liked it, this album reminds me how great a vocalist Sylvester was and question why I waited so long to replace the LP I had originally.

Sylvester's "final" album lives up to his legacy

While some find Sylvester "final" CD a bit bland compared to his earlier underground disco/dance roots, I think it's chock full of vital performances: "Someone Like You" (especially the remixed version on 12") is a great 80s dance anthem, his remakes of Stevie Wonder's "Living for the City" and Gershwin's "Summertime" are drenched in soul, but the peak here is the call & response proto-house track, "SOONER OR LATER" - featuring sizzlin' gospel back-up my MARTHA WASH & others, and really rockin' the house - it deserved to be a hit, but alas wasn't - I don't think Warners really knew how to "market" someone who could not (and would not) be pigeonholed like Sylvester - as AIDS tooks its toll in the late 80s when this album first dropped (1987 I think?), America just couldn't deal with a say-it-loud & proud black drag queen. FIERCE! And pick up "Fabulous Sylvester," the engrossing, fascinating bio of the biggest drag star in history, well, save for Ru Paul?

Burning it up - right to the end

I was a little shocked to read the All Music Guide review of this album, wherein they described his performances as "wooden" and "sounding like a shell of himself". Whoever wrote that review, didn't put this CD in their player. Syl SOARS on Mutual Attraction. Back are old favorites, Ken Kessie and Morey Goldstein producing and Tip Wirrick on guitars. His Manager, Tim McKenna of Borzoi Music Artists struck a distribution deal for Syl and Megatone with Warner Brothers, and Syl was back in the majors for this album. While this album doesn't approach the Dance/HiNRG/Electronica of his best for Megatone; i.e. "All I Need", "Call Me" and "M-1015", the production is flawless and Syl's vocals are in great form. There is also quite a few styles covered on this CD. His version of Stevie Wonder's 'Living For The City' is a gospel-flavored tour de force. His remake of 'Summertime' is also amazing. The dance cuts are 'Someone Like You', 'Sooner or Later' and 'Talk To Me'. The title song is great laid back kind of dance tune. And the jazzy 'In The Cool of the Evening' is simply great. The american version of this album came with an extended remix of 'Mutual Attraction'. Syl was also working on the follow-up to this album when he succumbed to AIDS. Three cuts were able to be salvaged from those sessions, and can be found on the Megatone release "Immortal", but they don't quite stack up in my humble opinion. I mourned his passing for quite some time. Whenever I hear Sylvester's unearthly wail on a radio or in a club - all I can think of is friends and fun and good times and Syl will always represent that for me. I recently was lucky enough to have found his rare first self-titled album from 1977 for Fantasy Records, as well as his last two for the label; 1980's "Sell My Soul" and 1981's "Too Hot To Sleep". As I write this - "Call Me" is in my car's CD player. Sylvester did not attain the true fame he deserved but left behind a rich legacy of music that knew few boundaries, and this is the gift he left behind for people to discover. Rest in Peace Syl and thanks for the great music and all the memories.

Mutual Sounds For The 1980's

This release would sadly be Sylvesters final complete work of all new material, but it was also his major label debut, as this work was released on Warner Brothers, and it could have been the first in a number of releases for WB.

Following his deft ability to create new dance songs in the post-disco 80's, like his tour de force album, All I Need, (re-released as Do Ya Wnna Funk), Mutual Attraction continues in this vein and does not disapoint.
Someone Like You, is a great kicking dance track that topped the Dance Charts and charted on the US Pop Charts as well, and title cut follows this formula as well.

However Sylvester also built his following by showcasing his versatility, and this is spotlighted here with updated reads of Summertime, and the Stevie Wonder classic, Livin For The City. Included here is also a great jazzy take with the track, Cool Of The Evening, and the heartfelt, Anything Can Happen.

Now that a number of this great talents studio albums are surfacing, but them, and treasure the many sides to this amazing talent.

Mutual Attraction was Sylvester's last album. It has a particularly camp cover, even by his standards, and the lettering is designed to the hilt in a pastiche of 30s style. Unfortunately the design really needed the LP format to have its full impact, and this CD reissue also reduces the size of the image further still and makes it a bit washed out - a great pity. The music has a more aggressive sound than some of the earlier material, even though it is less pure disco - in that sense it reflects the trends of 1986. It has a very 80s, shoulder-pads kind of feel, with the synths bouncing Sylvester's passionate vocals through some high-octane numbers like Talk To Me. Someone Like You has a brilliant video and is a mid-tempo number that has a pretty strong pull, Sylvester sashaying this way and that and waving his arms like an extraordinary bird of paradise, robust yet giving out a potent magic. Mutual Attraction is slyly witty, and sounds exquisitely just under-tempo, perhaps the best on the whole album, while Living in the City finds him taking Stevie Wonder's brilliant tune and making it his own. Summertime is transformed more wildly, as far-out in its way as Janis Joplin, but not quite that good! Cool of the Evening has a laid-back vibe more like the 1981 album Too Hot To Sleep. The heat sounds like a pretext for peeling off the tight shorts without even removing the roller skates ... Sooner or Later has a stop-start kind of melody that is nevertheless raring to make a proper go of it - shades of Erasure in the instrumentals - while Sylvester brings inimitable panache to the vocals. Anything Can Happen is a slow number with a very prominent bass, perhaps not one of his best. Overall the album falls slightly short, but it is Sylvester and as such very precious anyway ...

I'm quite particular with my 80s music and I can't say one album where I happen to love every single song. This is the only album where I can say such a statement :) I love every single song. Even though I adore 'Cool of the evening' it has extremely similar composition to 'Smooth Operator' by Sade; luckily Sylvester's distinctive falsetto vocals make it completely different. 'Someone Like You' runs circles around Adele's 'Someone Like You' with a disco/dance beat. GOD! I love Sylvester's voice. Other particular favourites are 'Talk To Me' (co-written by Sylvester), 'Summertime' and 'Anything Can Happen' and of course the album-named song 'Mutual Attraction'. If you love glamourous 80s pop music with a powerful singer and beat to get you dancing unashamedly. Please try something new and get this album. Like with most of Sylvester's body of work, it's underrated but unlike many pop stars today; Sylvester's worth every penny.

Sadly this was Sylvesters last record, he passed away two years later.
But tunes like Mutual Attraction does sound good today.
