Maybe because of how they seemed to put out new albums almost every day (figuratively) by 80's standards that a lot of people didn't think of what an musically daring and enthusiastic jazz fusion band Spyro Gyra was. Coming off the heels of the excellent
Alternating Currents
one could tell the new music they'd be making would have an extremely different flavor to it. Lightness in production and tone would not be as much a priority as really letting loose musically. And the dramatic cover art, plus the inner group portait featuring each member "cloned" with double imagry made it clear. If this band did indeed embody two musical sides basically it was clear that this album was going to express one side in particular. And that it would be exciting for band and listener alike.
Happily the side expressed here was their more fusion one. The album begins with "Bob Goes To The Store",actually a mildly new wave inflected, but nevertheless high octane jazz-rocker if you can imagine with a strong and determined melody. This doesn't have any slow tunes at all and concentrates on rhythms of different shades and moods. And so it continues on that mildly more slick R&B flavored "Double Take" and "Body Wave". "Swept Away" and "Freefall" are the slowest this gets and they're only midtempo anyway. The title track is the big surprise,a very theatrical 70's style fusion number in the Return To Forever style-the sort of tune you'd be panting after playing basically. "Whirlwind" follows up in the same vein only with a breezier Brazillian rhythm to it. Tom Schuman ends the affair with the uptempo Brazillian jazz-funk Flora Purim/George Duke sounding "Guiltless".
Anyone who thinks of this band as little more than easy jazz fit for a family brunch would be well advised to pick this and it's proceeding album up on CD. They're both available here on Amazon,on the cheap for pennies a piece most of the time and the music is more than rewarding. You get to hear the harder edged aspect of Spyro Gyra's sound here. And the mid 80's turned out to be one of their strongest overall era as a result of them beefing up the grooves and energy level of their sound. There's a lot of people who might look at the artist name plus the year this was made and pass this over by virtue of it's era alone. That would be a mistake. With music,as in most things around us appearances are very deceiving and this is definately one of those cases.

I am a big modern jazz / fusion fan, and this CD hits the spot nicely. I am also a Spyro Gyra fan, and I think this is one of their best albums.

The "Breakout" CD is loaded with outstanding jazz from one of my favorite jazz groups! Spyro Gyra hit a home run with this one.

曲・演奏はなかなか良いが、音質はそこそこ
Reviewed in Japan on February 16, 2016
さすがスパイロ・ジャイラ、というべき揺ぎ無いテクニックと息の合ったアンサンブル、ハイセンスな楽曲。意欲作。
#Freefall #Whirlwind #Swept Away
