S3059-SS Custom SensorAt the heart of the Rival 100 lies the custom-engineered 3059-SS optical gaming sensor with 8 CPI steps up to 4000, 143 IPS, and 20g acceleration. The enhancements made to create this new sensor provide gamers with the most accurate, 1:1 optical tracking experience for lesser-priced mouse. |
Optimized Lift Off DistanceUnlike gaming mice that have to reduce tracking performance to achieve a lower lift off distance, Rival 100 sacrifices nothing by offering the best tracking accuracy paired with an optimal low lift off distance. |
Zero Hardware AccelerationOn-board zero hardware acceleration means there is no acceleration in the properties of the sensor of the Rival 100. Regardless of how fast you move the mouse it will always reach the same point – it’s registering the physical distance the same - not the pace at which the mouse was moved. |
Performance CustomizationWith SteelSeries Engine, gamers can take full control over the Rival 100's performance. Customize and remap all 6 buttons, adjust the optical sensor's CPI, customize the illumination with over 16 million options, and create personalized configurations for your favorite games that auto-deploy when the game is launched. |

Build Quality & Design:
In terms of design and build quality, this thing is really nice. I like the minimal and straightforward design which doesn't look gamer-y. The mouse is not too small or too big and fits nicely in my hands but I would of personally liked it to be a little bigger. I mainly use a claw grip but I could see this design working fine for people with palm or hybrid grips as well. As for the buttons, there 5 in total. You have two side buttons on the left side which are super clicky and tactile and are well positioned. On the top you obviously have your main left and right clicks and the scroll wheel. The main clicks are also quite solid but they are a little bit on the heavier side for my liking. The scroll wheel is ok, it has a nice rubbery texture to it and scrolls with defined steps but is a little noisy. In terms of build, the majority of the build consists of a simple black matte coating which is grippy and comfortable to the touch. One down side of this coating however is that it attracts fingerprints and dust very easily. As for the sides there is a glossy plastic area with dotted perforations to help with holding the mouse. This is probably my least favourite part of the build. While they help with keeping a good grip on the mouse, these side grips can get quite uncomfortable after long periods of use. They're fine to use for 1-2hours of continuous use but beyond that they get slippery and make your hand sweaty and overall lead to an uncomfortable experience. However after a few weeks I got used to the side grips and they don't bother me as much anymore but this may be different for you. Overall though I am quite pleased with the build quality considering this is my first gaming mouse and it is a huge upgrade over my last mouse.
Software and Features:
In terms of features, the mouse features adjustable DPI with 8 defined steps from 250 to 4000CPI in increments of 250. The fact that is is in defined steps is a little disappointing but understandable for the price. As well as that, the mouse also features RGB lighting with various lighting effects to choose from which is impressive for this price. The lighting is uniform, bright and colors are represented fairly accurately. All of this can be controlled via the SteelSeries Engine software that you can download off their website. The software is simple and easy to use and allows you to change other settings as well such as polling rate, acceleration and deceleration and applying macros. Overall I have no real complaints in this department.
Sensor Performance:
The mouse uses a custom SteelSeries 3059-SS sensor and while I have very little knowledge about mouse sensors and which are the best ones, I can say that the sensor here does not disappoint. I used the sensor at 1000 DPI for my testing and whatever I was doing, whether that was flicking a sniper in a first person shooter, browsing webpages or anything else, the sensor managed to handle it all without any issues. There was no jitter or anything of that sort. The mouse also has no hardware acceleration for those who are worried about that. I tested out other DPI settings as well and they worked fine as well. Just note that the 4000 DPI setting is software emulated and not actually supported by the sensor. Overall coming from a office mouse, I can't complain about the sensor here.
Verdict:
Overall I have to say that this mouse is very good for the price and I would recommend it to anymore looking for a decent budget gaming mouse. It has a great sensor, good build quality, RGB lighting and included software. It isn't a perfect mouse and it has a few issues but for the price you really cannot complain about what you are getting here. There may be better options for the price but I feel like this is most well rounded mouse in this price category as it doesn't make any big sacrifices to maintain this price. Everything is well balanced and nothing feels particularly subpar about it.
+ Great Build Quality
+ Good Sensor
+ RGB Lighting
- Uncomfortable side grips for long periods of use
- Coating attracts fingerprints
- Limited DPI options
My rating scale:
1 Star - The amazon page was a blatant lie to trick people into purchasing it.
2 Star - The page was correct, but the product was not worth the money, or it was rather poorly made.
3 Star - The product is technically good, and meets expectations
4 Star - Feels / Looks good, mostly fits the purpose I bought it for.
5 Star - The product fulfilled the exact reason I purchased it, it does exactly what I want.
It does come with customizable RGB lighting which I love, however, I wish there were more zones because when using the mouse, you can only see the lights on the sides of the scroll wheel.
It doesn't come with a braided wire but I haven't had any issues with the cord. I find it to be rather soft and flexible, and it doesn't feel cheap.
The buttons feel responsive and I don't recall ever having any issues with it misclicking. Being a female, I have rather small hands and I find it to be comfortable to hold, even if I'm playing League for hours. However, compared to my new Logitech G502 ($60), the buttons on this are a tad more stiff. This is something I actually didn't notice until I switched back to this mouse temporarily for a few days.
While I do love the feel of the coating they use for the mouse, I did find that it started to wear down but it wasn't significant. It just doesn't feel as smooth as it was when I first got it due to a few minor scratches.
Overall, I recommend this mouse to anyone looking for a good, quality, affordable, comfy mouse with RGB lighting. Even if you're not gaming, I think it's worth it.
Cons: Non-braided cord, no indicator for CPI
I bought the Rival 100 to replace my Sensei Raw because the scroll wheel stopped working. I thought about getting another Sensei Raw, but went with the Rival 100 because it was cheaper. I was more than impressed with it. For a sub $30 mouse, it works extremely well. Since this is for office use, I haven't tested it in games. It is very comfortable and the rubberized top provides enough grip without being too tacky. I have large hands, and it fits comfortably without being too bulky. The Steelseries logo and the scroll wheel has RGB LEDs that can be customized with the Steelseries Engine software, however, unlike the Sensei, the LED colors don't change when switching CPI profiles. This isn't really a big deal, and even just having customizable LEDs is pretty good for a cheap mouse. Since there are side buttons on the left side only, it's not an ambidextrous mouse - it's only for right-handers.
I'm currently using this on a cloth mouse pad (the Steelseries QcK) and it works just fine. Some people say the Sensei is better suited for plastic pads and the Rival is better for cloth pads.
The only complaint I have about the Rival series mice is that the cord isn't braided like the Sensei. It's just a regular rubber cord. I would have expected the 300 and 700, at least, to have braided cords, but nope, all Rival mice have the standard rubber cord. It's not a big deal, but would have been a nice touch and really give the mouse a premium feel.
If you're looking for a cheap, corded mouse in the $30 range, consider the Rival 100. Its many features make it feel more than $30 and because it's a Steelseries, you know you're getting something that will last a long time.

IE3.0→DeathAdder→XAI→Kana v2→
・DPI(SteelSeriesではCPIという呼称 物は同じ)
