Customers are mixed about the size of the countertop oven. Some mention that it is easy to clean, does not take up a lot of counter space, and is great for compact dorm rooms. However, others say that the size is a bit exaggerated, the bread would have to be tiny to fit that many slices, and the tray that comes with it is small. Customers are mixed about the appearance of the countertop oven. Some mention it's nice looking, classically designed, and sharp. However, others say that it has a very poor design and the back will burn and the front still looks uncooked. The tray inside is cheap quality and burns and stains easily.
"...It's got a lovely matt black finish with stainless steel front, and easily fits 4 slices of bread in to toast on a single rack, so I've now been..." Read more
"...Also, the crumb tray is ridiculous. When you start to pull it out and it angles down the crumbs fall on the bottom of the toaster anyway." Read more
"...Cooks evenly. Sharp appearance. For quicker cooking though I'm not impressed. Preheating doesn't seem to help either." Read more
"...Either burn it or it is too light. Just seems to be a not well thought out design." Read more
Customers are dissatisfied with the burns in the countertop oven. They mention that the toast easily burns, the back half of the meal was burned, and the pizza crust kept burning. The heating is uneven, and it takes forever to get hot. The only toast setting is burnt, and there's a cheap quality inside that burns and stains easily.

Very light, practical and works very well.
I use it every day.
It's not big on the outside but it's big on the inside.
I loved!
My last B&D toaster oven was an earlier version of this same oven. Convection heating and same trays... slightly different aesthetically, but same oven. My only issue over the years was that the convection part of the oven wasn't "great". It worked OK but I got uneven cooking sometimes and I would inevitably just get in the habit of turning the tray around half way through. I have yet to have that problem with the newer oven. The old one finally burnt out a heating element up top.
I've had no problems using the broiler, baker or toaster functions on the new oven. Temperature seems dead on... and my toast is crispy outside and soft inside. In fact, the old oven trays fit in the new oven too. I've also maxxed out the temp and I have used it to keep items warm. Couldn't be happier with my purchase and I'll likely buy another Black and Decker when this one dies. Definitely recommended to anyone who doesn't want to heat up the whole house for a meal.. or for just morning toast.
That being said, there is only so much you can do when designing a toaster oven. They all are basically a metal box with top and bottom heating elements inside, a temperature setting control and a timer control. Even models that cost as much as a week’s paycheck don’t do anything more than look fancy and have more gimmicks.
There is only one thing that’s really important … how does it cook? All the fancy dials in the world won’t make a toaster oven great.
Several of Black and Decker’s mid-range models like this one are convection, which means they have a tiny electric fan that blows air around inside the oven for faster, more even cooking. I have a Jenn-Air full-size convection range and I love that technology. I hesitated to get this model because unlike the full-size Jenn-Air there is no way to control the convection feature separately; it runs whenever the oven runs. I had a convection toaster oven a few years ago that didn’t cook any better but the fan was incredibly noisy, so my expectations for this one were cautious. Fortunately I can’t really hear the fan sound over the sound of the mechanical timer.
One feature that differentiates different brands and models of toaster ovens is what kind of cooking element they use. These days 90% or more have either a quartz tube or a solid metallic heating rod; the old spring coiled wire elements are all but gone. The quartz tube type is generally found on the cheapest models and can have a slight advantage in being able to go from cold to full heat very quickly. But they are notorious for uneven cooking and worse, they are very delicate and prone to breakage (after all they are nothing more than a quartz glass light bulb that works by getting very hot). The metallic rod design like this one can last much longer, gives off more even heat and isn’t likely to shatter if accidentally hit or splattered with grease. They can heat reasonably fast but not every brand/model works the same. For example, to medium toast a slice of plain white bread my old toaster oven with the quartz tube element took 3 minutes. This Black and Decker took 4-1/2 minutes but a similar model I own also with a metallic rod heating element took almost 10 minutes. I replaced that toaster with this one partially because it was so slow and partially because the full-electronic control panel was too complicate to use.
This is a very simplistic toaster oven despite costing more toward the premium range and that counts against it. The rotary knobs have a reasonably solid feel to them. But because each function is labeled in English, Spanish and French with an extremely tiny typeface they are very hard to read. Unless you read the manual carefully it’s hard to understand why you have to set 3 knobs just to make a piece of toast (you don’t have to set them each and every time unless you change the mode in-between. There is no dedicated “toast” button. The timer knob is used to adjust toast lightness darkness, you have to turn past 10 and then back to your setting choice. The knob is very hard to turn backwards and requires so much force it feels like you are going to break it. The only way to cancel during a cooking cycle or turn the device off is to rotate that timer knob backwards. I don’t see that lasting a very long time.
Other things that categorize this toaster oven as low-end is that there is no hook to pull the wire shelves or bake tray out of the toaster when you pull the door open. Because toaster ovens are so small it is hard to reach inside to pull something out without burning your hand, so the auto pull-out shelves are a missed feature.
On the plus side, I like the swept-back front face of the toaster. It places the control knobs at an angle so they are easy to see and it also makes seeing inside the oven easier.
Black and Decker makes some claims about this being faster and toasting more evenly. From actual use tests I can say that it runs about in the middle of the pack in terms of speed, part of that due to it being a full 1500 watt device (the maximum many kitchen outlets can handle without blowing a circuit breaker). As the “more evenly” claim is also true at least in part, because they use 2 heating elements on both the top and bottom compared to the single element some other models use. Many people say no toaster oven can toast bread as well as an ordinary old-fashioned toaster and I tend to agree, toasting bread is not what they’re best at.
SUMMARY
While not the fastest toaster oven I’ve used it is reasonably faster than some other models I’ve owned. It does marginally better at toasting bread, bagels, muffins, etc. than other models I’ve used and quite a bit better at reheating things like pizzas because of the convection feature. The controls aren’t complicated, just overly busy labeled, hard to read, and not intuitive for the first time user (remember that in some homes guests may use things like toasters and I don’t think they should have to read an instruction manual just to make toast). Finally, the quality of construction is just okay, pretty typical of Black and Decker. This toaster over definitely won’t be mistaken for a Breville or Cuisinart or one of the top-end premium brands. I like it for how well it toasts and rate it overall as a 4-star product but I think you can do better for the price.
