I had no idea what "Brass Monkey" meant when I started this book. It didn't take long to find out! This book is, of course, a follow-up to "The Protocol" and should be read as such. Many incidents in "Brass Monkey" have a connection to "The Protocol". I have a feeling that all the James Acton books are connected by characters and events so I will read them all in the proper order.
As for this book, I highly recommend this one because of its relativity to today's events. It is a different kind of war story but one that could actually happen in the violent world in which we live. At one point, it brought tears to my eyes and that is a very rare occasion when reading a book. The characters are so real, the events so tramatic that I could hardly put my kindle down when I had to take a break. If the remaining books in this series stay at this high level of excitement, then the reader is in for a real treat. I know I can't wait to start "Broken Dove", the third book in the series.

“Brass Monkey” is the second entry in J. Robert Kennedy’s ‘James Acton thrillers.’ Kennedy has created a very likable hero in James Acton, and he has found a way to keep up the suspense and action that makes this a good page-turner right to the end. In the “Brass Monkey,” the plot captures the reader’s interest early. When I saw the title, I thought the Brass Monkey related the story to a bit of an Indiana Jones adventure. I really had no idea what "Brass Monkey" meant. It certainly didn't take long to find out! This book is, of course, a follow-up to the first in the series "The Protocol." Thus, although it can be read as a stand-alone book, I do think it is better the read them in order as many incidents in "Brass Monkey" have a connection to "The Protocol".

The "Brass Monkey" opens with a flashback to the Cold War. During 1985 the Russians recover a nuclear missile from a crashed US aircraft. Appropriated from the Russian authorities, the missile is later auctioned to the highest bidder. Islamic terrorists? Kennedy gives a real twist to the story here; rather than the current expected Islamic terrorists, sometime equally wicked occurs. There is also the most public spy swap in history. Now, the plot centers on the need to recover this nuclear weapon and avert a great tragedy.

While I thoroughly enjoyed the “Brass Monkey,” it was not quite as good as the first one in the series. This was a “good” book – not a great book. As in his first book “The Protocol,” I did like the main characters. He also managed to bring back several of the characters from “The Protocol.” I liked that! They are interesting, and I'm glad he developed them more. This is an action adventure that has some moments of great suspense; at times, however, it meanders a bit. Still, the plot was good and the characters were done well. The story finishes with a flurry of fast-paced action and the ultimate sacrifice. Just a good read!

The Protocol, Brass Monkey and Broken Dove are all great stand alone books but it's best to start with number one "The Protocol" Why? Because you won't want it to end and you'll keep on reading the series. It's hard to beat the first book of the series in action but both books afterwards make a noble attempt at it. I just started reviewing the books I have read because this style of book is my genre and I spend almost as much time looking up reviews and researching the book as I do reading the book so I owe it to others to write something about the books that I feel are worth it..... Enjoy this series!

I'll start by saying thank you to the author. I went through the first two James Acton novels this past week. They are enjoyable in a way I haven't felt since I first discovered Clive Cussler 2 decades ago. Just starting Broken Dove (thrid book in the series) today, and it occurred to me there's more than a little Indiana Jones feel at work here, which I like very much.

As the author wrapped the second book in the series, he noted how some might feel uncormtable with some of the topics. What got me (gets me every time) was the sacrifice by two characters to protect others...and the way he ramped from one (suddenly) to the second (somewhat foreshadowed) was simply great - caught me by surprise a bit, in fact.

Very happy to have found Robert Kennedy and this series.

Brass monkey is a very exciting sequel to the protocol . Some may find it offensive, but I don't think it is intended that way. It really speaks to what is happening in today's world between Islam and Christianity . It shows some similarities between the two, and also shows the decency that some in both religions can have. J Robert Kennedy has my vote of confidence in tackling this very controversial subject, and doing a spectacular job at it. He also managed to bring back a lot of the characters from the protocol. I like that! They are interesting, and I'm glad he expanded on them more. 5 stars! For continuing a great set of characters and tackling a very hard subject. Am on my way to pick up the third book in the James acton series, look forward to reading them all. Thank you T.C. McDonald

The historical link didn't work as well as in the first book, but it was another interesting aspect of the story.

Some author traits creeping in, a few too many 'wry grin's, 'pursed lips' etc, but otherwise very well written and easy to follow
