A January Bride (A Year of Weddings Novella Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 230 ratings

A year’s worth of novellas from twelve inspirational romance authors. Happily ever after guaranteed.

What will happen when novelist Madeleine Houser’s “pen pal” friendship with a lonely widower takes an unexpected turn?

Who can work in a house that's overrun by contractors and carpenters? Not Madeleine Houser, a successful novelist who gladly accepts the help of her octogenarian friend, Ginny, to arrange for a temporary office in the charming bed and breakfast owned by Ginny's friend, Arthur. Maddie’s never met the innkeeper—but a friendship grows between them as Maddie and Arthur leave messages for each other each day. To Maddie’s alternate delight and chagrin, she seems to be falling for the inn’s owner—a man who's likely many years her senior—and who she’s never even met.

Arthur Tyler is a college professor who lost his young wife to cancer. Together they ran the bed and breakfast where Art lives, but without his wife, the house is missing warmth and cheer. He jumps at the chance to have author Madeleine Houser use the space that was once filled with guests. He, too, begins to enjoy the daily exchanges with Maddie, but a series of misunderstandings lead him to believe she’s far from being a prospective date—even if he were ready to date again, which he’s not.

When Maddie and Art finally meet and discover one another’s identity, sparks fly. Even so, they each have obstacles to overcome in order for this winter romance to blossom.

“Having been the mother of the bride twice and the mother of the groom once, it’s fun planning a virtual wedding. Then again, writing A November Bride made me responsible for every aspect of the wedding, including making sure the couple made it all the way to the ‘I do’s!’” —Beth K. Vogt, author of A November Bride

FROM THE AUTHOR: I went from full-time stay-at-home mom for 20-plus years to full-time author. My passion is my family—my husband and I have four kids and an even dozen grandkids. But since, if a mom does her job right, she eventually puts herself OUT of a job, I'm delighted to have discovered a "next" career that I love.

My first literary love is fiction and I have written more than forty books and contributed to several anthologies. The third and final book of my Camfield Legacy series, Breath of Heaven, released in 2022, and my new Christmas novella, "The Wondrous Gift," is part of O Little Town from Kregel. I have also just released my first book on the craft of writing, Writing Cinematically: 12 Movie Techniques to Bring Your Novel to Life. This is based on a workshop I've been teaching at writers conferences over the past decade.

A typical writing day for me begins early—usually before 5 a.m.—with the business side of things: answering e-mail and reader mail, writing blog posts, reading for research. Our routine is much quieter now than when we had four kids at home! I have a routine that sets the stage: lighting scented candles, choosing music to write by, and brewing a perfect cup of coffee. I have a cozy office that looks out over our front yard, but I much prefer to take my laptop out to the back screened porch overlooking our woods where the deer, birds, squirrels, groundhogs, raccoons, foxes, and bunnies provide inspiration and entertainment.

As much as I enjoy the actual process of writing, I am an extrovert by nature, and doubt I'd have lasted long in this business were it not for the company of several wonderful online writers' groups, connecting with other authors at retreats and conventions, and meeting aspiring writers whenever my husband and I teach at conferences around the country.

Ken and I started road-tripping in 2018 and in 2021 we bought a 1998 Chinook camper and have taken several weeks-long trips since then—the southeastern coastal states, the northern states, northwest through Montana and Utah, and most recently a month-long tour of Texas. If the price of gas doesn't keep us home, we hope to add more destinations to our list. We love that we can work from the road while researching, taking photos, and exploring new story ideas!

Probably the most exciting event in my writing life so far was having my first novel made into a movie by World Wide Pictures. Certainly a dream come true for any author, and I feel blessed beyond words to still get to be doing what I love as my day job.

I'm not much of a novella person. I read A December Bride and it was a wonderfully light, sweet, fun book. I discovered that one of the good christian authors I've read (Rachel Hauck, I reviewed her books on my blog) wrote A March Bride (coming out in March, obviously) and I thought it would be fun to read these novellas. Why? Honestly because I haven't read many fictional christian authors I thought were above almost ok, so this is a cheap way of maybe discovering some new authors. I read a lot of romance novels and my favorite authors are all between books. I need more material! :)

The best thing about this book was that it made me laugh out loud. Deborah has a nice rhythm to her writing and although once again I was left wishing this were a full size book, that's not something to complain about, it is a novella, after all. The book is sweet, real, funny. The difficulties the characters face are things you can relate with, but without the excessive drama some christian authors feel they have to put in a book. This book is not preachy at all (horray!) and the story is sweet.

What more can I ask for really? A light read, good characters, fun story, happy ending.

I'll have to read a full size book by Deborah to see if I like her writing in larger doses, but this one was great.

    I give it 5 stars.

This story held a little surprise. The heroine was not looking to find love nor did she even consider the possibility. I appreciate stories tellers honest enough not dragging their readers through pages of dithering before finally love found is admitted. Good read!

The next novella in the Zondervan Bridal series is the January Bride by Deborah Raney. A little hint if you liked a novel The Accidental Bestseller which has appeared at Writer’s Corner then you will love this novel!
    Synopsis:
Madeline Houser needs to get her next novel written. Her sister says come to their house oversee the renovations and get your writing done because you can write anywhere. After spending some time at the house Maddie is barely able to get work done and wants to have a serious talk with her sister. Then her neighbor Ginny comes to the rescue. The she suggests going to this inn to write. It is owned by a widower who has lost his wife. Maddie’s first visit inspires inspiration and she finds working there great! It also helps that the widower leaves her notes. She also leaves him notes. What will happen when they actually meet? Could there be another bride going down the aisle?
    My Thoughts:
I am a writer and I love stories that discuss authors in the process of writing their novels. You would think that might not appeal to me, but it really does. I could not wait to visit this story each evening to find out what would happen next! The most major downer was that I sort of knew where the story was going with the bride going down the aisle. It was still fun to see how the plot of the story progressed.
Deborah Raney has written other novels that are worth devouring!

Nothing moves me more than words and to relate and become close to someone just through words is really amazing. This is what happens in A January Bride by Deborah Raney.

Maddie, the female main character, has relocated back home and has found friendship and love. Art, is the male main character, who learns to move past his hurt, pain, and memories with the help of friends and mostly through the art of writing. This book is really simple as it's about a girl meeting boy and falling in love happily- pretty much the recipe for brain sweets.

It's a really short read and this book would be five stars if it was longer and the plot more fleshed out a bit more. The main leads getting to know each other was painstakingly slow and almost had me screaming at the characters. You see, Maddie is a famous writer, she appeals to the women audiences with the books she writes. While she is staying at her sister's house back home, she realizes she can't finish her novel while the house is being repaired. Ugh, totally sympathize with her on this. Banging and repairing does not make an area great for churning out creative words especially when you have a deadline, which she does have.

Anyway, her old friend and neighbor gives her the best place to go so she can concentrate on her novel and she agrees. Through her meetings at the place she gets into a habit in writing letters back and forth to the owner. I bet you can guess who that is? Through a bit of misunderstandings, the two meet and bada bing bada boom....LOVE!

This was a well conceived idea of a novel. However, I felt it was a bit rushed in the end and because I knew it was a short read, I felt the meeting of the two should have moved a long a little faster considering the length of the book.

However, it was a quick enjoyable read and I enjoyed the story line. I wasn't completely satisfied because I felt like I was left hanging. However, this is my opinion.

But gives this book a chance, you may feel satisfied and have a complete different opinion. This book is apart of the A Year of Weddings series and it's a great addition to it.

P.S I got this book free from Booksneeze and was not forced to write a positive or negative review. Everything here is my own opinion.

A January Bride by Deborah Raney

A January Bride is the second book in a A Year of Weddings novellas penned by twelve different inspirational authors.
These are perfect books for an evening read, wrapped in a blanket, and sipping hot chocolate.

Writer, Madeleine Houser, moved her life from New York City to Kansas to help out her sister. Unfortunately, her sister’s home is being remodeled which means no peace and quiet to write. Neighbor, Ginny has the perfect solution— Arthur Tyler’s Inn.

Deborah creates a sweet story with a delightful twist. If you enjoy well written happily ever after stories of love, you’ll like A January Bride.

I plan to read them all. A December Bride by Denise Hunter is also available.

The first is my favorite yet, but it is so lovelly! We can feel the love of God through this couple. The fact that they knew each other by notes was really romantic!
