Editorial Reviews
Review
"The author's prose is sleek and organic, regarding both descriptions and punchy dialogue. But the most striking passages are from the killer's periodic narrative perspective--disturbing thoughts from a clearly tortured mind... An aptly crafted, riveting, and often unnerving mystery."--Kirkus Reviews
"Rubin's ability to blend the investigative and medical thriller components into a wider-ranging exploration of Ben's psyche and his career and family challenges lends to a story that is gripping, involving, and hard to put down."--D. Donovan, Senior Reviewer, Midwest Book Review
"The Bone Hunger has more twists and turns than the Iditarod Race. It'll keep you guessing until the end and hollering for more from Carrie Rubin, a woman with a special gift for writing and a serial character you'll admire, if not love, named Dr. Ben Oris!"--Mysterious Book Report

It drew me in after the 2-3rd chapter.
What a thriller!
I’m off to start the 3rd book in this series!
The Philadelphia winter setting is described in chilling detail; you can almost feel the icy snow crunching under the characters' feet. Speaking of characters, the main and primary supporting cast is lush with fully-realized individuals. While I personally may not have *liked* all of them, they all had interesting and believable motivations and perspectives. Even the familiar stereotypes, such as the pair of complementary police detectives, are entertaining to read.
Other reviews classify this book as a pulse-pounding thriller; I view it more as a thoughtful, measured psychological mystery with an intriguing paranormal hook. Don't be too eager to rush through this. Be willing to take your time and savor Rubin's writing for best results.
Carrie Rubin weaves an excellent tale designed to keep the reader in suspense by throwing in some twists & turns, and even when you are aware of being led astray, the diversion is interesting. I think that's part of Rubin's charm/appeal - there are classic whodunit and suspense elements, but they are aptly combined and metered to keep you engaged.
As with The Bone Curse, you are provided with an inside view of the medical profession along with some tidbits of related information. Also, in line with the first novel, Rubin takes us to the edges of the rational world going just over the edge with a bit of "what-if", keeping the tale in the realm of the believable while giving your mind some creative space to wander in.
I’m a big fan of Rubin’s books. I loved the first book in this series, and I know I’ll enjoy the next one. Her writing is always crisp and tight, and the descriptions are well-balanced so that they don’t interfere with the thriller-style pacing. Rubin brings all the characters to life with unique details and quirks, so that each one is truly memorable.
The other aspect to Rubin’s books that I also love is how she floats in an element of paranormal, which adds to the twists and surprises and keeps her a step ahead of her readers.
Definitely a book to add to your collection if you like medical thrillers, great writing, compelling characters, and a unique storyline.
Benjamin Oris – Book 2
Pub – 8/11/20
Published by Indigo Dot Press
I love medical suspense thrillers so my attention was immediately grabbed as I found the story line to be extremely compelling. Benjamin Oris, a 2nd year orthopedic surgery resident, gets pulled into an investigation involving the amputation of limbs and missing patients.
I didn’t realize that this was the second book in a series, unless I was halfway finished, so I just continued reading it. It says in the description that it can also be considered a standalone novel. I plan on reading the first in the series and have already purchased it.
The book did not hold up to my initial expectations due to the fact that there were so many players in the game and they were not all fully realized. Keeping track of who was who became a cumbersome task. We were told too many extraneous details about each person (i.e. their job title and how long they had been at the facility), but did not have the ability to really learn much else about them. Their core identity was barely scratched upon and the characters started to become muddled and chaotic. The ones that were described intimately became significant to me, but I couldn’t keep my interest going at the level required to really invest in some of the plot twists or the people involved, other than Ben and his immediate circle of friends and family.
All in all, I will continue to read this series and other books by this author.

As a physician turned novelist, there is a reassuring confidence in the medical writing within Rubin’s books; the medical descriptions in this one are certainly not for the faint-hearted! I devoured this book in about 24 hours and it definitely kept me guessing. I look forward to the next one in the series.

I must admit I found the premise of the crime slightly odd, but it turned into an exciting Agatha Christie-type whodunnit which kept me guessing. And bravo for an ending which was nothing if unpredictable. Looking forward to Book 3.
