At first, Jane and Colt's blossoming relationship and discovering Jane's true identity are the focal points of SOJ. But then, there's a twist: Jane's freedom--from the sinister organization that has controlled her life--quickly takes center-stage.
Throughout her hardships, Jane portrays the heart of a tigress, and is a remarkable heroine.
Thus, if you seek a sweet and dramatic romance that's jam-packed with adventure and mystery, then you want to one-click this five-star read!
Kudos, Amy! You produced a truly charismatic story. 💖
At first you think the lead character is a typical damsel in distress, with the hero swooping in to save her despite his own reservations. Not so fast...Hale takes her characters on a serious evolution with each turn of the page. Jane not only finds out more about her past and some potentially cataclysmic talents, but also a deep sense of self and inner strength which is often missing in the usual boy-meets-girl story. Many times in this genre there is an overemphasis on love at first sight, or the love of a perfect man saving the day. Hale flips the script on this one and creates a truly believable relationship between Jane and her male counterpoint, Colt. Colt is not perfect and his interactions between various characters can be downright grumbly, but Hale shares his perspective in such a way that you find yourself rooting for him. You wonder who is really saving who.
I cannot wait for the second installment of this trilogy! I am trying to predict where Hale will take the reader next in this journey and am so excited to see how it unfolds.
These four words of dedication were the very first words in this book, and they captured my attention instantly. There's nothing worse than a weak, pushover female lead in an Urban Fantasy novel. So it was this indirect promise that made my hopes rise high before I even started reading.
Good news: while there was still room for improvement, Jane did turn out to be a likeable, strong heroine.
Bad news: she wasn't very well developed.
Okay, given this book's total page count of only 171, it was clear from the beginning that there were going to be some shortcomings. Either plot-wise, character-wise or romance-wise.
The plot was pretty good, actually, even though there were a few loose ends that I wish would have gotten tied up and it was a little clichéd. I'm a sucker for the amnesia trope, though, so I managed to overlook some things that normally would have bothered me more.
The characters, well... Though they were likeable and relatable, they were lacking in depth, starting with the descriptions of their physical appearance and (not) ending with their personalities. I was never able to connect to them because I felt I knew nothing about them. Why were they the way they were? Why didn't Jane seem to be upset about her amnesic state? What was it that drew Jane and Colt together, besides their looks? What exactly was Lance's purpose in all this?
I did really like Doc, though, he was a little saving grace for me.
The romance part was too wishy washy and too... "insta" for my liking. I didn't feel the connection and I certainly didn't know what about Jane was supposed to be so appealing that suddenly every guy in her vicinity would turn into some stalker and try to claim her. So she was beautiful. Wow. Anything else?
There were two scenes, though, that made me want to applaud her, one of them the "final battle", the other one:
"It's my house. When someone comes in and tries to take what's mine, I fight for it!"
"Yours? Did you just say yours? I've told you before, Colt. I'm not an object to be owned."
"Damn it, I know that! That's not what I meant!"
"Could have fooled me."
You go, girl!
As for the writing, it wasn't perfect and felt a little awkward at times, but all in all, I liked it. It was easy to follow, even though the constant change of POV, sometimes even within a paragraph, confused me a little. Not a fan of that..
Bottom line: certainly a decent read that will probably appeal to a younger audience more than it did me. Even though the characters were in their early to mid-twenties, the book had more of a YA feeling to it and was mostly "clean".
While it wasn't perfect, it managed to make me curious to check out book #2, though I wouldn't be willing to spend almost 4€ on it.
ARC provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Above I was asked if there is violence in the book, I believe that would in the reader's perception. Sexual content? Down and dirty sex, nope, sexual tension yep.
This is the first in a trilogy, so I’m sure we will get more information soon, but with Jane’s abilities and how they progress and grow in the book, I really have no idea what she is. It reminds me a bit of the TV show Heroes. When Jane is again kidnapped by people who have experimented on her, we get to see more of these gifts emerge.
I think this book wraps up its own arc well enough, and gets ready for book two – without leaving you on a major cliffhanger.

Shadows of Jane is part one of a trilogy, currently being completed by the author, and I have to say that I will definitely be downloading part two, and pre-ordering part three when it becomes available.
The story is fast-paced right from the start with "Jane" appearing on Colt's doorstep in a dishevelled state. After she collapses, and is rushed to hospital, she wakes with amnesia and takes on the name of Jane Doe. The rest of the story revolves around her need to discover who she is and how to control her gifts of telekinesis. With progression of the story, her powers grow and become truly magical.
Colt and Jane Doe's relationship blossoms, and their characters develop nicely alongside the plot. I would have liked to have read more about Colt's relationship with his brother, father and absent mother, but I'm hoping we'll find out more about him in part two / three.
The storyline itself is similar to quite a few movies and novels, and the "surprise twist" that happens about three-quarters of the way through is predictable, but this doesn't detract from the original and beautiful description. I look forward to reading part two.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a good paranormal novel, especially those who have enjoyed Kelley Armstrong's Otherworld series.

Enjoyed it and looking forward to the next one
