There are some small downsides though. This scale doesn't really work for cooking. It only measures in grams, so if you want to use this for measuring ounces, you'll have to do conversions. Because it is so small, you also can't read the display if you put a large bowl on top to measure something like flour for baking. I just use a cheaper kitchen
scale for those purposes, but be aware that isn't a do-it-all scale.
One very small annoyance I have is that when you tare the scale, sometimes it takes a second to get down to zero. It works every time, but it would be nice if it was more seamless. Nonetheless it's hard to beat the features and design at the price. I have no regrets after buying this.
The Acaia Pearl S is highly rated, it better be as it costs about three times as much. It has more features and a connected app. I really didn't need that. The accuracy and the response time specs were the same between the two scales so I tried my luck with the Timemore.
This scale looks great. It is easy to use once you figure out where to press the invisible buttons (leave the plastic with the buttons marked on to get the hang of it). It seems very responsive with a change in weight of much less than a second. It is noted that the accuracy is +/- 0.1g. However that doesn't mean it will weigh 0.1 gram. Minimum weight is 0.5g. Some people don't get that and get upset when on bean by itself doesn't register.
My espresso machine already has a timer but I did like the automatic timer. I played with it some but then just used my espresso machine to time and the scale to measure the ratio of the shot.
Bottom line, it works very well, as advertised, looks great, easy to use, and is a great value.
The design incredible. The display is genuinely 100% invisible under the weigh pan when turned off and it makes for a uniquely sleek and minimal aesthetic not present on any other offering out there. Reviewers say this makes it hard to find the power button, but if you simply mind how you return it to its space in your coffee nook this really is a nonissue. Plus, the logo and USB-C charging port on the back make it easy to orient yourself.
Still, I would much appreciate it if there was an upmarket version with an inset tempered glass mirrored weigh pan to really lean into the "black mirror" aesthetic.; an infinity mirror would be gorgeous. A more instantaneous response would be nice too.
The one flaw is that there is no countdown timer function. For immersion methods like press or my siphon that the timer counts up into infinity means I have to constantly mind the scale to ensure I don't over extract. This is minor inconvenience but the ability to set an alarm that overrides the volume setting (that allows you to stop its would-be annoying beeping) would make this scale genuinely perfect for all brew methods.
Regardless I think this is the best looking scale out there, even better looing than those by Acaia on account of its more angular design. Do note however this is not the Bluetooth enabled "smart" version; that one's $260 making it substantially more expensive than all Acaia's offerings save for the pyxis, but you shouldn't be buying that one anyway because smart scales are dumb ;). The black mirror is reasonably performant, reasonably efficient, and very, very sleek. Great buy!
