Thermostat is a complete mystery
I hate/like this air conditioner. But I think, overall, I tend to like it.This one replaced a Frigidaire window unit that shook terribly and was incredibly loud -- just your basic window ac unit. This new one is positioned just a few feet from the desk in my home office is so much quieter. It's actually not bad looking. Just be prepared for the size -- it's probably bigger than R2D2, smaller than C3PO.I keep the ac unit on Econ mode, just like the last one. This Frigidaire model is one of the few portable units that I found that will stay quiet most of the time when it's not too hot. It will run the fan every 10 minutes, but it's unobtrusive. But when does it come on? Right now, a separate thermometer says the office is 83 degrees and the Frigidaire says 75. But the Frigidaire is not on, and I have no idea when or if it's coming on today. It does this a lot -- taking its time to decide it's needed. This may be helping me save on my electric bill, but it definitely has a mind of its own when it comes to sensing the temperature. Later in the day, it tends to come on and then stay on for a few hours even after it's chilly in the room. Someone wrote that the single exhaust tube needs to be sheathed in an insulating sleeve (not the decorative one included) -- the unit's temperature sensor goes into a feedback loop as it detects its own hot exhaust. If it weren't for the weird thermostat behavior, I'd give it five stars. Also, I'm still finding a good setup for the drain. I wouldn't operate any of these ac units without draining them. I found this unit needs to be elevated to get the water out, and a good way to raise this up is to buy this pan: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00004S7YO/ after installing some shock-absorbing pads: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07KP3M36J/I've attached a picture of the setup. If you didn't know any better, you just might think it was part of the Frigidaire unit.UPDATE:Apparently, a life-size R2D2 stands 48 inches tall. So this is slightly smaller than R2D2.Also, I gathered a couple of thermometers and watched while the room temperature climbed into the 80s and the Frigidaire's temperature gauge stayed stuck at 75 degrees and the unit wouldn't turn on in Econ mode. When I finally cycled the power on the Frigidaire, it seemed to recover and started to work normally. This is a bad sign. This means it fails without warning. You can't count on this model (or my unit only?) to work normally if you go out, and you're trying to cool plants/pets/electronics in hot weather.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don’t do it
Reviewed in the United States on June 29, 2018
Absolutely horrible. Amazon customer service is horrible. I was shipped a junk piece of crap. I reached out for help before reviewing but amazon was useless. The unit I received was not in original packaging and was ghetto wrapped in untapped boxes that were falling apart. The unit is nearly 100lbs. I don’t even know how I’d to ship this back. I don’t have a box this big and I can’t lift this. Waste of $500. Unit doesn’t cool one room very well and the water pan needs drained almost every 5 hours. There’s no way to hook up drain hose for running ac. Some things you just need to buy in person and this is one of them. Don’t make the same mistake as me. I’m tired of receiving crap from bad cheaply made stuff sold on amazon. No quality control.

4.0 out of 5 stars Looks great, works well, bit disappointing with the peeling paint...
Reviewed in Canada on May 22, 2019
Works well cooling down our dining room, kitchen and living room. It's way overkill for a bedroom, but great for large living areas. On ECO mode it's pretty quite and still blows cold enough to keep us comfortable. When it's cranked up to HIGH everything it does get kind of loud, especially if you are sitting close to it. It's a big heavy unit, but I'm not a little girl so it doesn't bother me. Rolls easily on laminate flooring, on carpet it takes a bit of muscle but still no issues. The handles have some flex to them. I read that some people said the handles hurt their hands but I found them to be fine.

No complaints about the app so far. As long as you follow the instructions in the app it seems to work well. The app is needed to change from Fahrenheit to Celsius, and to turn on the "clean air" function, so it's kind of a must have. I Have not tried it with the google assistant yet so no comments there. The included remote is very basic but works well.

The window extension bracket is pretty easy to use, no tools required. However it does still require some creativity with the provided foam, especially because the base of the bracket where the hose connects is wider than the top part that extends, leaving a gap between the extension part of the bracket and the window. This can be easily filled with the provided foam, but is a drawback when moving the unit to a different room/window as you may need to mess around with the foam each time.

There was a bunch of tape on the unit from shipping to hold the filters in place. When I peeled the tape off it removed some of the silver paint! Now this brand new $700, beautiful AC unit has an eyesore on it for everyone to see. Pretty mad about that.
