Caution!!! If one of the HDMI connections on your tv doesn’t say “HDMI ARC”, then this sound bar won’t work through the HDMI connection on your tv. So for tv’s that also do not have the Toslink digital audio connection (optical), the sound bar won’t work at all. It will only work while connecting to it through Bluetooth.
My work-around for this problem for 5 months was to connect to my Roku player on my tv through the Roku app on my phone (using the private listening setting) and then to connect to the sound bar’s Bluetooth connection to use it while watching Netflix, Hulu, etc.
But this didn’t work while watching DVD’s through our DVD player. I finally bought a “Toslink Optical to coaxial converter” (and the coaxial cable) off of Amazon, and now it works great!!! So like I said, it is a phenomenal sound bar. Love it!
(If you have the same problem with this sound bar the simple, cheap solution is a converter. Tensen makes a “Toslink Optical to coaxial converter”. It is available here on Amazon for less than $20).
We had an old Sony sound bar for 7-8 years. It died. So, we got another. I'm using the optical digital output of my Toshiba TV to the sound bar. The TV has basically two settings for you to determine PCM or Dolby streaming. Those are the only audio options. There's no "ARC" this or "dynamic sound" that in this way. With the old sound bar, everything was perfect. This one, however, has multiple algorithms for sonic playback - programed EQ curves. It also has a subwoofer which connects, using bluetooth, which is handy and wire-free. One of these two processes is delaying the audio signal. I'm a pro audio professional. I THINK there's DSP in the sound bar for switching the sonic algorithms that's adding processing delay to the stream. The algorithm it's set to (4 different ones) doesn't matter. The delay is about 1-2 frames. That's a TON of DSP delay in samples, though. I can't rationalize it any other way. I hope it's not a bluetooth thing, because many of these sound bars use bluetooth now. It might be. An EQ algorithm shouldn't cause that much delay. Just know I tested this from our TV normally using the limited settings available and then secondly from the optical output of my Macbook Pro. That's PCM and Dolby from the TV and Optical SPDif (PCM) from the laptop, separately. The stream is identically late from both sources. The audio will sound amazing, but the lips will be a frame or two off. I just can't fathom how people are praising this. 150+ good reviews?! Seriously? How are folks OK with this? I'd be happy to be the only person who couldn't figure out how to plug an optical cable into the sound bar, select the input source, then not get a delayed audio signal... That's probably not the case. This one is being returned. What do I do now? I don't know. Cross Sony off the list and figure something else out... I have a pair of Sony MDR 7520 headphones. I think the sound bar department needs to get with the heapdhone department to figure out how to make a proper sound bar for... sound.

Over the past few weeks i've used the sound bar daily. Everything about the Sony HTCT290 says one thing: simplicity. With the bluetooth enabled I am able to walk into adjacent rooms with my laptop or iPhone and i'm still able to play my music/tv shows audio without skipping, lagging, or losing the signal. The furthest i've stepped away from the sound bar with a bluetooth signal connected playing music was about 30ft. The quality of the music drops off a bit with heavy EDM between 80-90% max volume. At which point i'm already filling an entire floor of a house with music, so i'm not complaining. With pretty well all other genres of music you'll be still getting quality sound at the same volume level.
The sound bar definitely enhances the movie, tv show, Youtube video watching experience. I use the sound bar through my TV's optical connection and it delivers crisp sound and decent bass for whatever i'm watching through my android box or playing through my Xbox One. I don't think this is the best sound bar combo there is on the market. However for a mid-range sound bar + subwoofer combo, I don't have any complaints about my experiences thus far.

The subwoofer being wireless can be placed at any convenient location either standing up vertically or lying flat horizontally.
The thing I dislike is that there is no volume indicator on the soundbar so its not obvious when the volume has maxed out. A display with notifications would have been nice to have.
Sound wise I am happy for the price paid. Compared to the full price at which Bestbuy was selling, I think Amazon price was very lucrative.
