I prefer strong coffee. Most devices and brands recommend 2-3 tablespoons for a 6-8 oz cup. With my last coffee pot, I usually had about 6 tablespoons of coffee to make a decent cup. I was concerned when I put 4 tablespoons in the basket for this brewer today and found I could add maybe one or two more to have a very full basket of coffee grounds. I brewed a cup of rich brew, and I am impressed. This coffee is almost too strong for me! Never have I had a pot of coffee brewed at home that was on the strong side by my standards, unless it's an espresso machine. The rich brew really is incredibly rich and full-bodied. I don't know how a brew setting does this beyond the ratio of coffee to water, but I am amazed. I used 4 tablespoons of Trader Joe's French Roast, and I added more half and half than normal to take the edge off. I like my coffee to essentially be motor oil, but this can make coffee stronger than that!
If you like weak coffee, I imagine using the smaller side of the measuring spoon and a lighter roast coffee can give you the flavor that you're looking for. I do enjoy a unique latte from time to time, and all the recipes this book comes with look quite easy to make. I have a hand held frother I got years ago that I have used, but this frother works extremely well. It's conveniently attached, although I recommend removing it immediately after using as it'll drip on your counter. It has to be washed anyway, so I don't see this as a design flaw.
While this machine has a lot of plastic components, it's incredibly sturdy. I had a fancy Mr. Coffee latte maker (which broke and has parts that can't be replaced) made of stronger material, and it's broken, so that isn't an indicator of quality necessarily. I read through the directions once before I used the clean setting, which is a great feature. I would just run vinegar and water through the coffee pot when it seemed like it had been a while, so something reminded you to de-scale is very handy. If you're using this everyday, you benefit from cleaning quite frequently.
One of the things I always disliked about the Keurig, besides the waste, was that it was so hard to control. My family had one with three liquid amounts. The smallest gave you stronger coffee but a tiny cup. The middle one, standard for coffee, made quite weak brew, and we usually had dark roast that we filled it with. It seems like this Ninja would have the same issue, but you have four liquid amount settings plus 3 brew type settings, and 2 other settings that standardize brew and liquid for you. When you combine this with your preferred roast and amount of grounds, you have a ton of control over the type of coffee you're making with a single-serve system. Most single-serve systems simply brew the amount of water you put in with the amount of grounds. This is fine, but extremely limited and requires a lot of trial and error to figure out.
Some have commented on whether or not this comes with a tumblr. This item has two buying options on Amazon. I opted for the cheaper one, as the CF111 does not come with the tumblr. The tumblr isn't necessary for me, as I have many coffee supplies at home, and it's currently on sale for $10 with regular price $25. An extra $30 for it conveniently being in the box seems silly to me, and it's not necessary. I could see using it for the iced coffee feature if you don't have the right glasses for it, but I think you could find all those things on your own quite easily.
Some have cited issues with their mugs overflowing. I made a standard cup, and my mug was about 2/3 full. It wasn't my smallest mug, but the manual does indicate how much coffee each combination of settings gives you. The rich brew that I used results in about an oz less than the classic brew for most of the size settings from what I recall off the top of my head. If this is an issue, a rich brew with less grounds for a classic taste might be the best option. I know some mugs can be quite small, so it may take trial and error if you have smaller mugs in your home.
This is an item where I definitely read the manual before using as there are so many different settings to explore. The accompanying recipe book has some fantastic ideas and a variety of options. They can all be adapted to your personal tastes. The pumpkin spice latte (really a pumpkin spice cafe au lait, but who cares) recipe calls for sugar. I substitute in a tablespoon of agave (I have made this type of recipe by hand many times), and it has the right level of sweetness for me. The recipe book is a great starting point if you're new to making speciality drinks at home. It's all about the right combination of spices, sweetener, dairy, and coffee.
If you enjoy a Keurig, this product is a bit more work comparatively, but it's relatively simple. All of the "pros" of a Keurig seem to be that it's incredibly convenient, but I find the coffee isn't worth the convenience. The only drawback of this product is that it doesn't have a carafe, so if you're frequently making coffee for multiple people, you probably want the larger models with a carafe. Other than that, I see no drawbacks to this product, beyond the price point. However, I have owned many coffee pots over the years, and this is by far my favorite. It's sturdy and has a variety of brewing options while making excellent coffee.
I see the complaints about the cleaning light but from experience, it is probably a lack of following direction rather than a problem with the unit. The cleaning indicator will not shut off until you properly run the cleaning cycle several times (even if it is clean). Add a 16 ounce bottle of vinegar to the reservoir and fill with water to the MAX line. Put a large cup (32oz) and set for the multi-serve size. Let it pre-heat and push the "clean" button. Walk away. After it is done running, just let it sit for another 15 minutes. Empty the cup (careful, hot water is hot), push the "clean" button again and let it sit for 15 minutes. Empty the reservoir and rinse thoroughly. Fill to MAX with clean water and repeat 2-3 more times to make sure all of the vinegar is out of the system. I've had to clean mine 3 times now and the clean indicator shuts off every time when I am done. If you mess with the settings or power in between cleaning cycles, it will not turn off the cleaning indicator because it resets the counter and it is waiting for you to do the required number of cycles.
Just some advice.
Follow-up 4-22-17: It seems to need cleaning quite often as there are three of us who use it daily. I recommend filtered water to keep cleaning cycles farther apart. Other than that we are still LOVING this coffee maker!
Today after 2 and 3 months (bought 2 different models) I can say that I'm very happy and pleased with my purchase.
I was looking for something like this (all in one kind of stuff) and that's the only I could find.
This coffee machine is great. Quality is good, operations are quiet, it's fast and coffee taste good what else we need more.
So far I didn't have any problems whatsoever. Can't really think why other people had some much problems with it, maybe user error or really really bad luck. I didn't contact customer support or seller 'cause there was no need so can't say anything about that. I bought 2 of them and both are great. So if you are hesitant because of bad reviews... don't be. I can only recommend this product.
