Product Description
Nights of Azure is a tragic tale of two friends faced with impossible decisions that will test their loyalty to their quest and to each other. Set on an uncharted island that floats in the North Sea, Nights of Azure paints a picture of a land where nights are tormented by azure-blooded demons. In this kingdom of Ruswal, very few people leave their homes after the sun has set, let alone have the strength and skill to take on these powerful monsters. One of the best among these brave few is the protagonist, Arnice, a knight of great skill and power, who is assisted by her friend and priestess Lilysse in a quest to rid the land of demons. However, they soon find out that the solution to the island's problems might not be as simple as defeating enemies in battle.

In the game, the world is still surviving in the aftermath of a demon lord from years past that was defeated due to a priestess sacrificing herself to bring him down, and as his blood rained down on the world, demons sprung forth and now plague society at night. Cue the main characters, paired together on a mission to stop the demons in this island city, you have Arnice, who is a knight basically owned by a large corporation and sent to various locations to battle the demons. Her partner for this mission is Lilysse, a long time friend of hers, though they haven't seen each other since a mission in Germany two years earlier when the game starts.
There are other characters, but the majority of the story revolves around these two and how the overall threat and story affects them, what between demon lords pending resurrection, shady corporations, characters with secret agendas, and two women forced into impossible situations and expectations. I really loved it. I especially loved Arnice and Lilysse.
There are a couple of moments of costume fanservice that made me roll my eyes, like having Lilysse work at the hotel so they can put her in a maid uniform, but also keep in mind, this is a low budget game, and the hotel is Mission Control Center, so they had to give Lilysse some reason to be there all the time, since she doesn't exactly work for the corporation the same way Arnice does. And then, Arnice has her own fanservice costume for a ritual she does. It's not terrible, but I think the trope is so old at this point it needs to be let die.
Seriously, anyone to give this a harsh negative review: the problem is with them, not the game. Yes, it has a female protagonist, calm yourself, you can still relate to human experience and enjoy being told a story. Yes, the game is dubbed in Japanese with English subtitles, because it's a small company that can't afford to hire a new cast of voice actors AND bring the game stateside, so they had it subtitled. The subbing is good and easy to read. No, there is not a male love interest in the game- YAY!!! It's not the same story like basically everything else! This game is actually really refreshing to play. It's simple, it's different, it's fun. I highly recommend it.

Note: This isn't the first time I've received a NEW PS4 game from amazon directly that had the disk LOOSE in the case. I don't know how this happens. If anyone knows about this being a common thing I'd like to know more. But my disk was luckily functional so no complaints.
Is the story interesting... well that's a hard one. it balances on the edge of being "cute" and avoiding actually being a yuri game that it ends up not having any fulfilling dialogs or substance. I mean the main maiden that your protecting works in a coffee shop at the hotel and that's her big character arch since she has to convince everyone that its ok for her to take care of herself... or is it really so the dev could put her in a maid oufit.
Good:
Grind Happy game
Pretty (I like cellshaded games)
Different monster layouts actually change the powers attacks and visual appeal.
Funny side stories like one about a cupcake that is always horrible.
Monsters- i like the each has a distinct personality and you can talk to them at the hotel. Though most says the same thing over and over.
Fan service - minimal but present in odd places.
Blah:
Story - It never gets much more interesting then monster hunting
Weapons - all look different but don't change the play style in any meaningful way. So i chose the best looking ones.
Frame Rate - for the type of game it's not bad, but expect slow down when there's a good few things going on.
Bad:
Most side missions are as boring as they come, and often i didn't even realize i completed them until i got back tot he hotel. Many sight seeing one, that are for places you've already visited. Expect a lot of the same same. The most interesting one are the day missions but they are done through text blurbs and easily forgotten.
So i might be biased... like really biased. I like anime based games, i like the style and i tend to enjoy the dumb repetition. Which means i give this game a pass for things that I'd normally despise in more western AAA titles. Now is it a horrible game, in no means, is it simply terrible? No. Is it an interesting game that i want to know everything about like the Witcher games... no. Do I enjoy going around collecting random things in the hope of getting a newer better monster? Yes. Do i enjoy the story enough to use it as my vehicle to keep play? Yes. Is the fan service nice but not over the top? Yes.
