FUNCTION:As far a skimming it seems to work great. Adjustments for water flow and air intake are easy to make small changes. Produces lots of skimmate. I'm using it on a sumpless 50 gallon and it seems to be keeping up. I've been using it for a couple months now. I do a fairly wet skim although it does dry skim well also.NOISE:The noise made by the skimmer pump seems acceptable though it is noticable. Mostly the sound of the bubbles being produced, not so much a pump noise.MICRO BUBBLES:I read other reviews that mentioned the micro bubbles but I haven't had a problem with them after the skimmer ran for the first couple days.DESIGN:This is why I knocked off a star. While the skimmer does manage to produce a lot of skimmate my problem lies with the following design issues, mainly the collection cup lid and drain.I have a drain line going from the collection cup down to a bucket so I don't have to remove the cup to empty it. The drain outlet is placed very high in the collection cup, almost to the top of the inner tube where bubbles are produced. The top of the inner tube is very close to the lid. So when the collection cup is filled to the point it can drain out the waste tube I get protein bubbles coming out the top of the lid through the 4 air slits (see photo). The level of skimmate remains constant at the depth of the waste outlet. So... with a drain tube attached I don't have to empty the collection cup every day but I do need to clean the lid almost daily else the scum that bubbles out the top eventually runs over the edge and I don't want it dripping on my floor. It hasn't bubbled over to the point it drips on my floor yet but has definitely accumulated on the side of the skimmer but dried before dripping to the floor. My tank is in the basement on a concrete floor (easy to clean) but I wouldn't want this in my living room over carpet. The drain outlet should be lower in the collection cup and I may make my own modification.Another design flaw is the way the skimmer hangs on the edge of the tank... it leans slightly. The tubes the skimmer rests on the tank edge are different sizes and one is higher than the other so the skimmer hangs slightly crooked. I ended up putting foam under the plastic tubes anyway to prevent vibration noise from the skimmer hanging on the tank so I adjusted it level with the foam. The locking screw to secure it the the tank. It's very difficult to spin (plastic screw/plastic threaded hole) with your fingers and requires the use of pliers for the entire length of the threads. With limited space pliers aren't easy to maneuver and adjust the screw.CONCLUSION:I don't regret the purchase. In fact I'm quite pleased with it, especially for the price. It suits my needs well. My tank is built into the wall of my basement so all cords, tubes, etc. are hidden and allows for easy maintenance so the flaws I mentioned aren't a huge issue for me. If this was going to be visible in my living room or over a carpeted area I don't know if I'd feel the same.
