I like (love!):
- Works as advertised! Producing skimmate.
- No fuss set up. Out of the box and into the tank easy. I didn't have to tweak the wheel at all, left as shipped and works great.
- No fuss operation. Other large skimmers I've had to adjust optimal wet or dry skimming level by raising or lowering the skimmate cup. Sometimes they'll sink lower if they get full, causing too wet and overflow, or stick when trying to replace the cup. No such problem with this little guy, it started skimming right away at an optimal dark green skim and no adjustments. Also didn't have to prime pump or fuss with air line.
- Fits my rimmed tank (would fit rimless also)
- SUPER quiet.
- Tiny form factor and sleek design
- Price.
- Some other reviews mentioned micro bubbles. I don't have that problem at all with mine.
Downsides:
- The intake is not at the surface (it's about 6" below the water line) so it doesn't skim /degrease the *surface* of the water well. (Does pull gunk out of the water column though.)
- The pump's in the tank, not external. (But it is small.) So takes up some valuable space inside the tank, and I'd rather not have ugly pumps in my tank if I can help it.
- No large water chamber that I could choose to throw chaeto algae or other filtration into, and doesn't increase system water volume. (I have a HOB refugium, but no sump, so I like all the extra system water and natural filtration options I can get.)
- Specs say it's designed for a 50 gal, so probably best for less than that...too small for my tank long term.
The price is higher than it should be, as this is not a quality product, but does work well... until it doesn't. The skim chamber is rather small, so it had to be emptied daily on my 29 gallon reef. I do not like the open intake sitting in the tank, really needs a cover. I made one from an old filter intake, but should be standard.
My biggest complaint is the pump stopped, I emailed the company, got one reply saying to clean it. I replied back telling them all the steps I had completed trying to get the pump to work, and failing, but never got a reply. I cannot understand what happened. It was working as intended one day, then the next the pump acted like it has zero power. It would spin free out of water, but instantly reduced to nothing in water. I assume it must have leaked, had some powerheads in the past that split and leaked with similar results.
I was happy to hear from the manufacture / seller when I first sent the message, but the zero follow up since is not acceptable. The fact that I bought 2 of these for my small reef tanks makes me even less happy. 1 is still working, but I would not waste your money on this item. Its just too much money for such a cheaply made product. My old seaclone is still working 20 plus years later.. I have no idea how, but is a bit louder and larger, but its back on my 29 and running beautifully. This product couldn't even manage a few months. I have since shut down my nano reef that the other skimmer was running on and cannot say how long it would work if left running.
I would avoid buying this skimmer if for no other reason that the customer support is terrible. I emailed seaclone and have nothing but positive things to say, even if they told me they no longer made them and I had to custom make a broken part. Finding another skimmer in this size / price range seems to be a challenge.
