Product Description

From the Manufacturer

LONG REACH WITH SUPERIOR PERFORMANCE.

When you're at the top of your game, you need gear that can keep up. The AF-S NIKKOR 600mm f/4E FL ED VR makes no compromises when it comes to performance. This popular 600mm prime lens has been optimized for today's high-resolution image sensors and fast shooting Nikon DSLRs, elevating your ability to quickly capture stunning images. A new magnesium alloy lens barrel design and the incorporation of fluorite elements makes it nearly 3 pounds lighter than its predecessor. Pair that with the latest in lens innovation and optical precision for the ideal lens choice for outdoor sports, action and nature photographers who need the reach a 600mm focal length will provide.

Tripod-compatible image stabilization

~4.0 stops of Vibration Reduction

Reduce blur caused by camera movement, even in low light. Nikon's VR image stabilization counteracts camera shake and vibration up to ~4.0 stops*, a must-have feature when working handheld, on a monopod or even a tripod. A specialized Sports Mode is optimized for camera pans and fast-action sports, and the Tripod Mode eliminates the subtle ground vibrations that are constantly passing through a tripod or monopod.

*Based on CIPA Standard. This value is achieved when: FX-format compatible lenses are attached to an FX-format digital SLR camera

Lens-to-camera precision

Superior AF tracking and exposure control

Track fast moving subjects—even those moving erratically, at random speeds or approaching the camera quickly—with tack-sharp AF precision. During high-speed continuous shooting, the electromagnetic diaphragm mechanism operates in sync with the camera shutter for fast automatic exposure control and consistency between shots, even when using a compatible teleconverter.

Ready for the field

Lightweight, durable and reliable

This is a lens built for tough assignments. A new magnesium alloy barrel and fluorite elements reduce the overall weight by nearly 3 pounds versus its predecessor**. The protective front meniscus is coated with Nikon's nonstick Fluorine coat, which makes it easier to wipe off water, dirt and smudges. Ball bearings in the tripod collar ring ensure smooth transitions between horizontal and vertical shooting.

**AF-S NIKKOR 600mm f/4G ED VR

SPORT Vibration Reduction

For pros shooting fast and erratic moving sports subjects, using the SPORT VR mode will give you a more stable viewfinder image, handheld or when using a monopod, even if you’re panning. Track subjects easier when shooting in Continuous mode and as an added benefit with the D4S, the continuous shooting frame rates and release lag time are not affected while using VR. Even use SPORT VR when shooting HD video. The Tripod VR function even eliminates the vibrations that may transfer from the ground to the tripod in both Normal and SPORT VR modes.

    Amazing lens
Not a lot I can say that hasn't been said, but I will confirm what others have said. When I first took it out and tried it in the yard, it didn't seem to focus any faster than my 200-500 - which was one of the reasons I'd purchased this. I've concluded that the light wasn't good enough on that overcast late afternoon. I took it down to the lake where I like to shoot, and it was amazing! Fast focus, and frame-filling 600mm. When I looked at the shots on the computer, I was even more pleased. I've been happy with the sharpness of the 200-500, and just applied a little sharping in post processing, but these shots were absolutely sharp right out of the camera! Superb lens!Today I tried it with the 1.4 extender. Still pretty fast focus, and seems quite sharp - at least as sharp as the 200-500, and maybe even a little more so - and at 840mm!!!Another thing to add after 6 months of use: I have this attached to a D850, and _always_ shoot hand held. That's with a grip and extra battery on the D850. I'm a 150 pound 5'10, so you don't need to be muscle-bound to use this lens hand-held! I walk up to four miles with this thing (okay, walking is my exercise, so that part isn't unusual), but just carry it at my side with a Peak Design slide strap, and swing it up for shots! It's that easy to manage!Update 7/22: I've moved to the Z 9, and it works flawlessly with the Z 9 body. At least as well as with the D850, if not even better. AND, I've used it with the 2x teleconverter quite successfully. Not as sharp as without, or with the 1.4x, but usable, and autofocus works great even with the 2x converter.
    Thank you for your feedback

5.0 out of 5 stars Shedding Pounds
Reviewed in the United States on August 21, 2015
It goes without saying that Nikon's professional primes are top-tier tools. My guess is that anyone looking to purchase one of the new fluorite models is really asking themselves the question of whether or not the "FL" is worth the additional magnum duffel of cash that must be forked over vs. the previous model(s).

The answer is all about weight. If you are a tripod shooter, don't do much air travel with your gear, and seldom pack your prime around then you can save the extra coin. DXO has not reviewed the 600FL or 500FL yet, but it's obvious based on tests of the 400FL that these new designs are about shedding pounds and that optical performance is equivalent.

If you are like me, and have been bent into the posture of neanderthal man from lurching around mountainous terrain with a lens roughly equivalent in weight and ergonomics to an adolescent pachyderm...then absolutely you should get the FL version.

This 600FL is about 3 pounds lighter than the previous 600/4, 2 pounds lighter than the old 400/2.8, and even weighs 1/5th of a pound less than the outgoing 500/4. It's not just total weight, however, because the new design is much less end heavy and more balanced as a whole.

Can you handhold it? Well, I have been handholding the 10-pound 400/2.8 for years so this 8-pound 600 feels dramatically easier to handle in every regard. It's still physically large and requires good technique but since weight has been my #1 sore spot (literally) regarding super telephotos I pre-ordered this lens as soon as I saw the technical specifications.

The price hurts but the FL primes are significantly easier to handle, carry, mount on support equipment, handhold, and travel with. If those things are deciding factors for you, it's an investment you won't regret.
