Received my GT1080 a day earlier than stated (kudos!) and went to Lowe's Home Improvement to get materials to build a screen frame, but it was getting late and I decided to save that project for this weekend. Sorry 125" screen. You'll have to wait. For now, I'll have to humble myself to a miniscule 92" at 16:9 aspect ratio... :'(
Set up my manual pull-down screen and with the screen down, set up, aligned and keystoned the projector in place. Connected my setup:
1) Optoma GT1080
2) Xbox One with Kinect
3) Logitech Z623 2.1 surround speakers with subwoofer
Test One (Halo 5: Guardians):The gameplay is exactly as they state it should be. Lag free. Every nuance popped out more, colours were vibrant and sharper, and no rainbow artifacting whatsoever.
Test Two (Riddick, DVD): I've seen a lot of standard definition movies on a 1080p set and they don't look as impressive, probably from a lack of proper up-conversion. It was quite watchable, but I did notice a bit of ghosting on some scenes, mainly those with rapid changes from light to dark scenes. It wasn't intolerable and I'd probably not have noticed it if I were not looking for it. I've yet to try some other DVD movies, so I'll have to make an addendum to this review when I've gathered more data.
Test Three (Captain America: Civil War, Blu-Ray): ...blown away by the level of detail and colour. Simple.
Test Four (Tron: Legacy, 3D Blu-Ray): My mouth is still open and my face still carrying a look of astonishment at how well this played, especially the light cycle, light jet and arena battles.
Have not tried it with my PC, which is also capable of 3D Blu-Ray playback as well as VR, so that will be coming later.
After only a day of extensive setup and playing with it, I'll give it 4 stars (for now) as I need more data to give everyone a better, more accurately detailed review on image quality, latency, screen artifacts, etc.
(Update 11/1/16) -
So I've now had this projector for a few weeks and I've been able to review it a little more thoroughly and I find that more and more, despite the few shortcomings it has, I am absolutely in love. First the Cons:
1) The manual focus: as long as it is in place and not bumped, nudged, moved or shifted in any way, focus remains clean and crisp.
2) No horizontal keystoning: When I say it needs to be DEAD center, I mean DEAD CENTER...as in even a degree off will annoy you.
3) Not loud but not quiet: not the worst con, as a decent surround sound system in all but the quietest scenes will negate this effect,
4) Remote codes: My Xbox One Kinect can turn it off by voice, but it can't turn it on...yeah, I know - first world problems... :-/
Now the Pros:
1) Resolution: DVD's are not too bad. No obvious artifacting except as I noted earlier, but best performance is with Blu-Ray discs.
2) 3D: With proper DLP Link 3D glasses, performance is magnificent. The syncing emitter isn't really needed.
3) Connectivity: Since the only thing I have hooked to it is my game console, the two HDMI's do not bother me at all, and without a receiver, the 3.5mm jack to my Logitech Z-623s has been a blessing.
4) Brightness: every photo attached is the projector in ECO mode, as Normal raises the fan noise a bit and I keep my basement room pretty dim/dark. Brightness in Theater and Game modes is perfect.
5) Color reproduction: I'm no expert. In fact, a relative novice videophile. But even uncalibrated, I can find no fault in the quality of colour reproduction. Could it be better? I'm sure it could. Does it serve my needs? Absolutely.
6) Throw Ratio: Considering my Kinect is right behind it, closer to me, there is ZERO interference with the image at a conservative 92-inches, and that's only because I have not built the frame for my 120" screen yet (that's this weekend).
7) Contrast. Dim room, pictures attached, should speak for itself.
8) Xbox One voice command: Well, when I tell my Xbox One to turn itself off, it turns the projector off as well.
9) Power Saving Auto-Off: I fall asleep sometimes watching movies late. After 30 minutes of detecting no signal, it automatically shuts off. My wallet and electricity usage thanks you, Optoma!
10) Value: the price was good. I got mine refurbished, but there was nothing wrong or odd about it at all. Panel fitment was tight and aligned. Bulb was new. All accessories included.
Guys, look. Buy what you want. Examine every option and find what is right for you. I just know that for what I need, this never disappointed me. I DO recommend.

So after living with what I thought were the best calibrations for this projector for about a year and a half and being about 75% happy with the picture, I decided to try to re-calibrate from scratch and see what would happen. Well now I'm closer to 95% happy. Movies and games look immensely better after my latest calibration, and I'll share the settings below. Bear in mind I am projecting onto a grey Silver Ticket 2.35:1 screen, so a white screen may require adjustments to not be as bright.
-Display Mode: Reference
-Brightness: -2
-Contrast: -5
-Sharpness: 14
-Color: 3
-Tint: 0
-Gamma: Graphic
-BrilliantColor: 5
-Dynamic Black: Off
-Color Temp: Standard
And I didn't mess with adjusting individual colors. But now there's practically no artifacting in bright spots, skin looks normal, and the brights are brighter and darks are darker. Very happy with this! Hope this helps someone else struggling to get the right settings.
*Original review*
Great projector! Not at all perfect, but as my first projector this one is serving my needs.
I'm going from having a high-end 55" Samsung LED to this GT1080 in my pseudo home theater, so the screen size is the "wow" factor, but the image quality is the "eh" factor. I was not expecting the same image quality as my LED tv from this particular projector, but it still took me a bit to get used to. I know with a better projector and a better screen material, I could achieve something closer to the look I would like to have one day.
Pros:
-Short throw (I'm projecting a 140" screen with the projector roughly 6 feet away)
-Good picture overall (very sharp, good saturation of colors, good contrast)
-Low fan noise (only noticeable to me in movies and games when there's extremely low volume or none at all)
-Playing games and watching movies on a 140" screen is amazing
-Almost non-existent input lag in video games (I play a lot of different games, but Battlefield 4 was what I used as a benchmark to see if I could detect any lag, and I did not. My inputs were as fast and responsive as they were on my LED tv. Side note- I felt like I was playing better on a huge screen since I could see more details off in the distance and I could sight headshots a lot easier. Did have to adjust my look sensitivity in the game to be a little slower.)
Cons:
-Highlights (no matter how I set up the picture and tweak the settings, this projector has a tough time with highlights and makes them look totally blown out with a ring where the blown out highlights meet the non-blown out parts)
Top reviews from other countries
Setup : Quite basic, I use it on a small table, projecting directly on a white wall, about 148" diagonal screen. The image is sharp, clear and the "normal white paint" does not reflect any flashing light and doesn't cause any blinding effect at all. No need for a projector screen.
Usage : I mostly use it on my PS4 but also tested my 1st gen chromecast, PS3 & chromebook 11. Everything is perfect, had no problem at all. The internal speaker is surprisingly great. I've been watching my tv shows at volume 1 and sometimes it is too loud.
Gaming : I primarly looked into Optoma GT1080 for gaming. And I'll say it : I do not regret it. I was first scared for some "rainbow effect" which I was kind of sensitive few years ago with previous technology, with projectors we use at job. With this one, I do not see it at all on a normal use (I can slightly see it if I very quickly move my eyes in every direction super fast...but very very slightly see it). I also thought that the "ghosting effect" would get anoying on some games, since I play some FPS games, like BF4 & BFH. But omg! Not at all. The very little ghost effect is barely noticable. I have had no headache playing BF4, during 4 to 5 hours straight (yes... you use it a lot the first week lol)
Interesting fact : Some users will understand why I take time to note this -> the projector seems to keep the input signals to both HDMI sources. This means I had my chromebook on input 1 in dock mode & I switched to input 2 on my ps4 to check something. When I switched back onto input 1, my chromebook did not go to sleep mode (which is frustrating because you have to go back to it, unflod it, press the power button, fold it back) So this is very interesting when you need to switch between two devices.
The remote : Light, useful, it glows A LOT in the dark when you push any button, lol. The "re-sync" button is quite interesting, since working with HDMI sometimes glitches the audio. So instead of unpluging everything you just hit this button and hop, everything's back on track! The menus are great & easy to use and understand.
*3D : not tested
The reason this is not 5/5 stars is the image is slightly soft on the left edge. That they manage such a huge projection size (twice the throw distance) is an amazing optical feat in my opinion, and I can live with that...especially as immersed as I am in the 3D content.
It will automatically detect and project 3D content from a bluray 3D source (hdmi 1.4). As I run side by side 3D I have created from a laptop, the projector needs to be set up for this kind of 3D source. Setting up 3D on menu was so quick and easy.
I was worried about brightness, as it is 2800 lumen vs my old dual 3400 lumen projector setup. Even with 3D shutter glasses in my studio with no covering on windows (cloudy day mind you at 60 degrees north) projection was fine!
Very delighted with this projector, well done Optoma.
