Tricks, traps, and treasures abound!
Captain Toad stars in his own puzzling quest on the Nintendo Switch system! Our stubby hero must dodge dangers and track treasures across many trap-filled courses. Survive smoldering volcanoes, hazardous steam engines, haunted houses, and even new courses based on the Super Mario Odyssey game! Luckily, a second player can join in by tossing turnips at enemies.
Play anytime, anywhere, and anyway you want—even in two-player mode using a pair of Joy-Con controllers on one Nintendo Switch system—in TV mode or Tabletop mode. You could also play alone in handheld mode! No matter what, explore each puzzling course for treasure, like hidden Super Gems and Power Stars. As you reclaim the treasure stolen by the monstrous, greedy bird, Wingo, you’ll eventually be able to play as Toadette! These tiny heroes must waddle, hide, pluck, chuck, and power-up through enemy-infested locales like towers, wild-west shanties, and Goomba waterparks—all bursting with secrets. Aim your head-mounted flashlight at adventure!

You'll play as Captain Toad and at certain points, his female counterpart, Toadette. Your goal will be to obtain the star and three gems present in each level. The gems are not required but you must collect the star to complete the level. Each level is comprised of a large 3D cube that you must traverse in order to get to the star. You can manipulate the camera using the Wii U game pad to your advantage to discover different paths and secrets as you navigate the level. You will encounter a host of typical Mario enemies in each level; some that you can defeat in different manners and some that you must simply avoid.
In my opinion this game is a fantastic value. Not only are there more levels than I anticipated there would be, there are a nice variety of levels to get the game interesting. There are water levels, haunted house levels and even levels where you ride through on a mine carts, to name a few. Even after you have obtained the three gems and star in each level, there is also a hidden objective that doesn't appear until you beat it the first time. More often than not you won't have completed the hidden objective on your first play through, since it is usually something fairly difficult to do. Examples include finding a hidden gold mushroom in the level, collecting a large number of coins or beating a level without harming any enemies. I love that these objectives exist, because they usually require you to play through the level again at some point with a measured strategy. After you've done all of the above in each level, there is even a final, very difficult challenge in each level - to beat it within a certain time. This makes even the first few, easier levels of the game challenging.
This game is more of a casual, puzzle type game than a hardcore one. If you have young children they would likely enjoy it, as well as many non-gamers. That's certainly not to say that regular gamers wouldn't like it, though. I consider myself a gamer and I have had a blast playing through this game, as has my girlfriend.
Visually, it's beautiful and there is no lag. Then again, I don't think the Wii U really even has to push hard to get this game going.
Some of the gameplay features though..
First off, Toad can't jump. He can only walk, run, pick up things, throw things, and turn on/off his light. Oh and he also only has 2 hits.. Then he's done! So you have to be careful know what you're doing!
You shouldn't have trouble beating this game though. That is unless you're trying to get all the challenges complete.. then good luck! They still implemented that "Nintnendo hard" feeling to it, if you're up the task.
This game was definitely created and targeted for a broad audience though, so everyone 6 and up (in my opinion) should have a great time playing this.
I strongly recommend picking this game up if you've got the extra cash and if you're looking for a new type of game to play. You won't be disappointed!
If you just spent 140$ on the new super smash bros, pokemon omega ruby/alpha sapphire like me though and you're not sure if you wanna spend anymore money, I would say just save it for later. It's by no means is a game you NEED, but it is very cute/enjoyable!:)
Nintendo knows how to make a game!
With the inability to jump you have to get creative on how to kill or avoid enemies. To kill them you can pull up plants and throw them at the enemy, or you can fall off of a higher level in order to squish and destroy them.
Captain Toad has levels that are easy enough for my 4 year old to play and others that are complex enough that my 11 year old has to replay them to beat them. Several of the levels are puzzle like which make your kids work through problem solving and figuring out how to make it work.
5 Stars, great game tons of fun and loads of replay value!

Level and puzzle design is great, as are the characters. Graphics and sound are also top-notch. A really fun/entertaining game that's easy to pick up and play.
