- Reviewed in the United States on January 12, 2016Author Sean McLachlan certainly has the writing skills to produce an interesting novel. I don't really feel the need to focus on writing, but rather my five-star review is based mostly on the world-building that creates this story. A lot of post-apocalyptic fiction these days seems to resolve around zombies or some other stupidity (or it is just "prepper porn" - look it up if you don't know what I mean). The Toxic World, however, feels to me like something that very much could happen - a slow, miserable global collapse as our environment and global economy decays to the point of no return, and the world drops into a chasm from which any return will be generations in coming.
In addition, there is just enough of the pre-collapse technology around, that every little bit of it can make a difference. Antibiotics, special weapons, electronic gadgets - every one of them is a double-edged relic that can perform some great act and serve mankind still, but also reminds the characters of how far the world has fallen. There are a number of examples of this in the book, and I really liked how it was handled.
Also, a lot of the dumber tropes of post-apocalyptic fiction are either avoided or handled in a much better fashion. There are zombie/mutant analogues, but they're really just people who live out on the fringes and get sky-high off of whatever chemicals they can scrounge from the ruins. There are evil cults, but they don't seem cartoonish or overly simplified. There are no special mutant powers, no giant killer weasels, no "chosen one" prophesied to save mankind. This is just a well-written, cleverly conceived story, and I highly recommend it to those who enjoy post-apocalyptic fiction.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 25, 2014Radio Hope is a well written and entertaining yarn, painting an evocative picture of a dystopia filled with desperate characters clinging on to the remnants of civilisation - definitely a page turner. I agree with the previous reviewer who noted it was reminiscent of the Fallout series of video games. It is a little on the short side for my taste (I finished it in three sittings - albeit fairly lengthy ones), but given the low, low price, that is a pretty minor complaint. I hope the rest of the series can live up to this very promising beginning.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2014Sean McLachlan has written a riveting book that draws you in from the beginning, making you care about the characters involved in trying to survive in a world shattered by decades of disasters and wars.
Though two of the characters are a single mother and her young son, RADIO HOPE is broader in scope than THE ROAD, evoking echoes of THE POSTMAN but with an ending just as nail-biting but that doesn't let you down as THE POSTMAN's did.
No backstory dump for Sean. Like a master storyteller, he weaves the past into the grim present in deft strokes that keep you turning the pages.
As compelling as THE WALKING DEAD but with more believable crises that may very well arise for all of us if our governments and zealot groups do not learn wisdom and restraint. The world is toxic but the human spirit strives on in RADIO HOPE.
And the mystery of the lone radio station broadcasting survival lessons and hope kept me turning the pages.
Like Stephen King, Sean paints characters you root for and whose final fates are uncertain until they claim them. No sure victors in the toxic world he presents ... only a fine story that stays with you long after you've closed the book.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 25, 2016Evil corporations and the greedy rich pollute the earth and turn the waters and most of the land into a toxic wasteland. The remnants of the upper class occupy a city on the ocean, but exclude lower class scavengers, keeping them out of the walled city in the "Burbs." But a murdering horde of Christians following a self appointed messiah scour the land, killing anyone who refuses to convert, and eventually attack the city. The city and burbs must unite to fight them off. a well written action book.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 21, 2021A good storyline with well developed characters. Only disappointment was the end of the battle that just ended without any realistic resolution.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 3, 2016I've read a number of post-apocalyptic novels. This one is very different from those popular post-apocalyptic novels that made into movies. This is more mature, in depth, and more realistic than other fun-filled but rather shallow novels. The stories and characters are developed very well. Stories seem so real, often dark and hard life, but heart-filled stories are there, too,..., and most importantly there are people who seek for hope. I enjoyed reading this book very much.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 17, 2016Set well after some disastrous wars, this novel has a very nice The Book of Eli vibe more than, say, Mad Max: Fury Road and thus avoids the pulpiness of a lot of post-apocalyptic reads. A true page-turner, Radio Hope sets the stage up quite nicely for the next Toxic World novel, but unlike so many first novels, is a full story in and of itself. Quite looking forward to reading Refugees from the Righteous Horde (Toxic World Book 2)
- Reviewed in the United States on February 14, 2018I liked Radio Hope. Sean has created this world that is the direct result of corporations running amok. I found myself wanting to know more about the way the world was broken and although it is strongly hinted at, I'd like to know more about the wars and exactly how the fat-cat corporations brought the downfall of civilization.
It was a little slow at first, but picked up and was fairly action-packed through the second half. I'm immensely intrigued with finding out the story behind Radio Hope. I'm looking forward to reading the next book!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best of its kind!!!
I really enjoyed Radio Hope. I am a fan of this genre and have read many post apocalyptic action/adventure books/stories and I would rank this as one of the best. I give Radio Hope 5 stars for a very simple reason, it deserves it. The author creates a credible post apocalyptic society with believable characters, a solid story and a well structured concept. It has been a long time since I have enjoyed a book so much. If you like this type of story then get Radio Hope you will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Post Apoc read
This book was a good read. The characters where well written and the background rich. The plot moves at a fast pace with a fair amount of intrigue and plot twists. I found myself unable to put this novel down.
As a massive fallout & Post Apocalyptic fan I have to disagree with the Fallout comparisons made by other reviewers. Other than the world being destroyed and humanity surviving by a thread (which is kind of the point of the genre) there is very little in common with the plots or settings of Fallout.
The Toxic Bay setting is a good one and I enjoyed it a lot. I look forward to reading more of this series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good post apoc dystopia.
Radio Hope is a post apoc dystopia set in the US.
The world created is good, and we're not overloaded with details at the start but left to get on with reading the story about a community trying to exist in what is difficult times and the challenges that a lawless country make. In some ways it's reminiscent of a western novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good ending that was very satisfying
Excellent storyline cleverly and simply put forward. A good ending that was very satisfying that did not require you to buy the next part just to find out what happens. However I enjoyed the book so much that I intend to by the next book.
