Product Description
Product Description
Sony Camera Lenses SEL35F28Z The small size, versatile 35mm focal length, and outstanding overall performance of this Carl Zeiss Sonnar T* lens make it an ideal match for compact 35mm full frame format E-mount bodies. Although the optical design is state-of-the-art, this superb wide angle lens remains true to the original Sonnar concept with a bright F2.8 maximum aperture (“Sonne” means “sun” in German). Three double-sided aspherical elements minimize aberration so that stunning contrast and resolution are maintained right out to the image edges at all apertures. The renowned T* lens coating contributes to natural color reproduction as well. When changing your aperture to defocus the background, the light sources appear blurred. This ‘bokeh’ effect of the blurred background can be enhanced with circular aperture blades used in this lens. Conventional aperture blades have flat sides creating unappealing polygonal shaped defocussed points of light. α lenses overcome this problem through a unique design that keeps the aperture almost perfectly circular from its wide-open setting to when it is closed by 2 stops. Smoother, more natural defocusing can be obtained as a result. Aspherical lens design dramatically reduces spherical aberration while also reducing lens size and weight. Spherical aberration is a slight misalignment of the light rays projected on the image plane. This is caused by differences in refraction at different points on conventional spherical lenses which degrade image quality in large-aperture lenses. Specially shaped “aspherical” elements near the diaphragm restore alignment of light rays at the image plane, maintaining high sharpness and contrast even at maximum aperture and can also be used at other points in the optical path to reduce distortion. Well-designed aspherical elements can reduce the total number of elements required in the lens, thus reducing overall size and weight. Advanced Aspherical (AA) elements are an evolved variant, featuring an extremely high thickness ratio between the center and periphery. AA elements are exceedingly difficult to produce, relying on the most advanced molding technology to consistently and precisely achieve the required shape and surface accuracy, resulting in significantly improved image accuracy and quality. Coated optics were pioneered by Carl Zeiss - and this superb lens features the Carl Zeiss T* (T-Star) coating that virtually eliminates lens flare, internal reflection and light scattering that can otherwise occur at glass-to-air surfaces. The T* coating contributes to outstanding image quality, with high contrast and uniformly excellent resolution right out to the image edges. Not simply applied to any lens - the T* symbol only appears on multi-element lenses in which the required performance has been achieved throughout the entire optical path, therefore guaranteeing the highest quality. Only the middle groups of the optical system move to achieve focus, so the overall length of the lens does not change. Other important benefits include fast autofocusing and a short minimum focusing distance. Also, the filter thread at the front of the lens does not rotate, which is convenient if you’re using a polarizing filter. The dust and moisture resistance design makes this lens appropriate for heavy-duty outdoor use, especially when combined with a camera that employs weather resistant measures. 2014 Sony Electronics All rights reserved. Technology
Circular Aperture
When changing your aperture to defocus the background, the light sources appear blurred. This ‘bokeh’ effect of the blurred background can be enhanced with circular aperture blades used in this lens. Conventional aperture blades have flat sides creating unappealing polygonal shaped defocussed points of light. α lenses overcome this problem through a unique design that keeps the aperture almost perfectly circular from its wide-open setting to when it is closed by 2 stops. Why?
+Great build quality, weather sealed, durable, I like the lens hood/cap and it has a great look and feel. A pleasure to use.
+Smooth focus ring, just the exact amount of resistance
+Very portable, matches perfectly with the a7/r
+Fast focus
+Great for all around photography, street photography, hanging out, etc. Very versatile
+Sharp throughout most of the frame
+It's not a 1.8F (I wish), but because you are shooting with the a7, the full-frame allows you to get some nice bokeh if you isolate your subject with a distant background.
Last but not least: It is a Zeiss! the elegant colors it produces can not be matched (in my opinion) by other lenses. I have gotten some really unique images with this lens. The way a lens "feels" is a very important characteristic for me, this lens feels spectacular and it has just the right size and weight to match the a7, this makes me want to grab the camera and frame something in an artistic way, the results have been awesome! I highly recommend it!
-Light
-Great image quality (it's a Zeiss so you know it will be good)
-Small form factor (does not draw attention)
-f2.8 is a wide enough aperture for most situations
-Good build quality
Cons:
-Expensive compared to competition
-Lens hood is a strange design
-Front lens cap is extremely small.
Overall, this lens is awesome. You will love it's size, light weight, and image quality. The price is a bit steep for a 35mm F2.8 lens though. If it's too high I would look at the 28mm f2. I find 35mm on a full frame sensor to be almost the perfect walk-around / street photography focal length.

I am not seeing any chromatic aberrations but am still in the process of testing the lens. I have the Sony RX1 and feel that this lens is comparable to the lens on the RX1. I am hoping that Sony comes out with an ultra wide angle lens soon…..but for now, this is a good start……..
Pros
- High IQ at any f stop, absolute beast when stopped down a tad say around f5.6 it becomes sharp as a tack.
- Incredible contrast and micro-contrast
- small, light, and goes incredibly well on the sony mirrorless cameras.
- Focus ring is insanely smooth and butter-like.
Cons
- None as far as Optical Quality goes but the lens is made of plastic, albeit high quality plastic, but I would have paid a small premium for a metal version. The lens is very unassuming but to me it comes off as a bit boring, lacking character.
