Filter media improves water clarity, color, and odor. Porous ceramic rings provide an ideal growing site for beneficial bacteria. Bio-balls promote gas exchange and increase dissolved oxygen levels. Filter media will not affect water characteristics. Filter media is also great for SunSun HW Canisters or any other filters.

Product Description
Canister Filters provide superior filtration ideal for larger or heavily-stocked aquariums. Suitable for use with freshwater or saltwater aquariums, canister filters maximize filtering capacity by taking advantage of their large filter body. Canister filters are used by fish enthusiasts who need superior mechanical, biological and chemical filtration in large aquariums that house their fish. Canister style external filter offers a greater quantity of filter materials to be used along with a greater degree of flexibility. Water enters the canister filled with the chosen filter material through an intake pipe at the bottom of the canister, passes through the material, and is fed back to the aquarium through the return pipe. Water is forced to circulate through the filter by a pump inside the canister. External canister provide a high volume of filter material without reducing the internal space in the aquarium, and that they can be disconnected from the tank for cleaning/maintenance and replaced without disturbing the aquarium interior or occupants.

There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later.
After unboxing, the filter was able to be assembled and installed in just over an hour, with little to no help from the instructions. For example, included in the Filter Management section, and I quote
"Remove and replace tae [sic] plug ire [sic] the socket 3-4 times [sic] Gently shake the filter to remove remaining air"
The included green vinyl hoses were very reminisce of those included with an Eheim; however, they very flimsy and thin in comparison. The inlet and outlet connections, referred to as 'curvy bars', are very thin as well, making the overall curvy bar/hose connections an unexpectedly difficult task. Each time I tried to slide the hose over the hose barbs, the curvy bars would start to bend and crimp. With a little bit of patience, some Vaseline and a lot of extra time, I was able to setup the filter without any additional hassles.
Bought new, the HW-302 does not come with any filter media, besides a few thin pieces of biochemical cotton (filter floss). Knowing this ahead of time, I purchased SunSun branded filter media to help keep the overall costs low. Unexpectedly, priming the filter actually proved to be the easiest part of the total assembly with the availability of the large priming button, which feels solid and is easy to articulate.
Pros
-Large priming button
-Similar in build to more expensive models
-Extension tubes for intake (adjustable depth)
-Size/Depth of filter baskets offer a larger footprint/surface area than most filters
-Near silent operation
-Overall Cost
Cons
-Included parts (inlet/outlet 'curvy bars', hoses) are very cheap and flimsy
-Included instructions are minimal and apparently lost in translation
-Water pressure is surprisingly low. Estimated at 150 gallons per hour rather than the stated 264 gallons per hour
For anyone who doesn't want to spend an arm and a leg on a high-end overpriced filter, I think SunSun has enough Pro's to get you up and running. With a little ingenuity and spare time, the intake/outlet pieces can be easily replaced or upgraded with higher quality parts, making this an overall satisfactory purchase.
UPDATE:
Changed to 5 stars
This filter has outperformed a Marineland C360 and a Fluval 306 within the time I had it. It is still running strong and I have ordered 3 more to run on my tanks.
I ended up replacing the factory hoses and doing a DIY spray bar for the current filter, and it outperforms my expectations daily. We have been through 3 major power outages, a tank rupture and this thing has started back up like it is brand new every time.
Get someone to help you when you set it up: one person to prime, and the second to keep the hoses in the tank until the pump is flowing properly. This is especially true if you have an elevated tank - the hoses will bounce around when you pump the filter.
Getting it going initially was kind of a puzzle. You have to pump the primer a LOT to get it to push water in. And bone dry it won't work; fill the canister up with water first, seal it up, then put your hoses in and start pumping. Without a solid water vacuum, it won't pull the water in.
Cleaning can be a hassle, because you really need to drain it and let the canister pump out as much water as possible before opening it up. Otherwise you'll get water everywhere. But cleaning is a rare occasion.
I definitely recommend this thing. It keeps my tank super clean, it's quiet, and it's inexpensive for a canister filter. You can't go wrong with it, just take your time to figure out how to work it right.

There is no noise on this thing. Very good flow and the tank is crystal clean.easy to maintain also.
I have used it for month now for my planted aquiram of size 36x1.5x1feet tank. The cleaning is really good and it's very silent as well. Love it's performance and water is crystal clear.

I have used it for month now for my planted aquiram of size 36x1.5x1feet tank. The cleaning is really good and it's very silent as well. Love it's performance and water is crystal clear.
Pros:-
- Priming was the easiest part, without using the primer. Just filled water in both the filters and switched on. Voila, no sucking, no pushing the primer.
- The intake filter has got a surface skimmer attached. Plus the intake modules are highly customizable and should fit tanks upto 3 feet high!
- Operating noice is a 20/30 db low hum, which I cannot hear except in the dead of the night.
- Outflow is a long tube consisting of modules that let you customize the height as per your tank size. The outflow itself isnt very strong to cause fish discomfort.
- The canister, pipes and trays are well built and should serve as a biological filter for long. There is zero leak as well.
Cons:-
- The attachments are not of the highest quality, and need to be handled with care.
- The place where pipes attach on both the canister as well as the in/out devices is just about enough, and takes strength and skill to get it right. But once done, is 100% leak proof.
- Instruction booklet is not detailed enough, so watch youtube setup videos before attempting to assemble.
Trivia:-
I have setup the filter with BioHome Ultimate 1 litre, Eheim Substrate Pro 1litre and Fluval BioMax 1 litre. Spent much more on the media than the two filters combined.
