1. Plays Blu-ray and regular DVD perfectly.
2. Vast selection of apps.
3. You can play media from other computers or USB slot.
4. Good integration with Samsung TV.
Cons-
1. The interface and some apps are slow.
2. Access to online web storage didn’t work.
I bought this Samsung Blu-ray player along with my Samsung Smart TV about 6 months ago. So far the experience has been very smooth. My primary use for this player is to watch DVDs and Blu-rays. This is not my main device to access apps like Netflix and YouTube. Over the last couple of weeks I got curious though and decided to give the apps a try. I will elaborate a bit on my experience as well as the pros and cons in this Blu-ray player.
BLU-RAY MOVIES AND DVDs
Like I mentioned earlier my main use for this device is to watch movies on DVDs. I specifically enjoy watching a lot of 3D movies. I have not had a single problem with this player. Movies play quickly and smoothly like you would expect. The 3D movies look pretty amazing. Very close to theater quality (in my opinion). Keep in mind that picture quality is going to depend on the movie and the TV that you are using. Fortunately, this player also has backward capabilities. This means that regular DVDs play without any problems. Even personal home made movies play nicely. I am very pleased in this aspect.
APPS AND USER INTERFACE
The user interface in this Blu-ray player is simple and user friendly. When you turn on the player you get options to visit a Samsung Video store where you can buy or rent TV shows and movies. You also have access to your app drawer where you can see all of your downloaded apps as well as download from the Samsung App store. Most of the main apps can be found here like Netflix, YouTube, Amazon Videos, HBO GO, Spotify, Pandora, Plex, Hulu Plus, Vudu and more.
To the left side of the home screen menu you have the option of looking at videos, photos, and music from outside sources such as USB or even your computer if you have it set to share videos. I have downloaded a lot videos online, stored it on my USB, and played it on this video player using the USB slot. I am very pleased with the amount of files that it has been able to play. I have tried mp4, avi, flv, mkv and they have all played fine.
You also have the option of watching pictures and videos from cloud services. Unfortunately I did not have much luck with this feature. When you first click to have access to the web storage you are prompted to login with or create a Samsung Account. This is a pretty tedious process but you only have to do it once. After I logged in using my Samsung Account, I kept getting a message that it was “connecting to server… please wait…” and that was it. It did not get further than this. I couldn’t login to my dropbox or any other online storage. It is disappointed.
Overall though my experience navigating through the user interface and using the apps was pretty good though. I experienced some lag in some apps including YouTube. It felt a bit slow when navigating through the menus on YouTube. As a whole though I had a very similar experience as the one in my Roku 2. This video player has the USB slot that the Roku doesn’t have.
REMOTE CONTROL
The remote control is comprised of all physical buttons. Thankfully it is not the touchpad controller that Samsung is shipping with the new TVs (that one sucks). I really liked that the remote has a dedicated Netflix button that opens the Netflix app with one click. Very convenient if you want quick access. Make sure you don’t have anything obstructing the video player or you will have to point directly to the player to get the remote to work.
The remote control is also able to control my Samsung TV. I can do the basics such as control the volume, turn the TV on or off as well as change the source in the TV. I cannot control the Smart Hub or navigate through the menus with this control. I have to use the TV remote for that. One neat thing that I found was that when you turn the Blu-ray player it will automatically turn on the TV and redirect you to the Video player home menu without you having to change sources manually.
CONCLUSION
Would I recommend this Blu-ray player? I would. It is a reasonably priced and it offers a good value. In my time using it I have had a positive experience. Movies play smoothly. There is a vast amount of apps to choose from and for the most part they all work well aside from the occasional lag. This video player is a good substitute for a Roku, Apple TV, or Amazon FireTV. I like the integration it has with my Samsung TV. I hope this review has helped you decide whether this video player is right for you.
The remote is HORRIBLE. If I could review it separately, I'd want to give the remote one star. I'm looking for another remote right now. The buttons are tiny and close together. The right arrow button is very close to the exit button, so it's easy to hit exit and have to start whatever you were watching over again. It also has a giant Netflix button right over the play button. This is annoying, because it's easy to hit accidentally and I don't even use Netflix. If that button was at least programmable, so I could choose the app it links to, it would be okay. I'm thinking that either the two companies are linked, or Netflix paid Samsung for the position on the remote. I cannot stress enough how awful this remote is, but I'm not going to deduct from the review for that.
One thing that is a reason for pause is the browser.
The web browser is slow. When I read reviews criticizing it, I thought to myself that it wouldn't matter to me because I'm not going to use it for internet access--I have a computer for that . However, I would like to be able to stream from the major networks and I can't. I don't know if it is an issue with the website or the browser, but with ABC and CBS it started to play, but seemed to time out, so I suspect it's a browser issue. I gave up after that.
I really like this player. If I could stream through the browser, I would absolutely love it. The remote is the biggest problem, really. For the money, it's a great deal. All in all, I'm happy with my purchase and I recommend it to anyone, as long as the web browser isn't a deal breaker for them.
