The first thing I noticed was the package is super-heavy. Next, I came to the realization that the bike won't fit on a standard bike rack, so I had better make other plans for getting it where I needed it. Fortunately with the straps the bike in the box fit on the roof rack.
Assembly was a bit painful, likely because I hadn't done any significant bike maintenance in years, umm, well, maybe decades. I eventually got it put together, although it probably took an hour or so. The directions were okay, but not great. The parts are reasonable quality, and everything goes together and works. Getting the wheels lined up was probably the biggest challenge. Eventually it works and the bike gets put together. Also be ready to tighten up all the nuts and connections after trying to ride the first time. Some hex bolts did feel like they came loose between assembly and the first few rides.
We had never ridden a tandem bike before, and it wasn't as super easy as I hoped. Here are my lessons. If you try having the heavier person on the back, be ready for pain. We found it works best when the lighter person is on the back. There front person straddles the bike, holding in straight, while the stoker (back person) climbs on the bike, no longer touching the ground. The stoker needs to be mindful to not jam the pedals into the first person's calf or other leg parts. Then, the front person starts riding like a normal bike, and hopefully we are off to the races. The front-person can try riding without the stoker (back seat empty) to get used to the bike. My 12 and 10 year old daughters are very comfortable on this bike after some practice.
The bike weight keeps it from being immediately super-fast, that and my wife likes to basically sit and do very little work pedalling. However, it is a lot of fun for the whole family, two people at a time.
We live in Daytona Beach. I keep my bike stored INSIDE my house.
The bike never would shift into 3rd gear right out of the box. No big deal thata a low gear anyways.
I lubed everything wirh dry lube with teflon to keep everyrhing safe and kicking.
We rode it ti the beach TWICE and it has sat doe about 3 months.
I went to ride it yesterday and couldn't shift a single gear. Both sifters were rock solid. After spensing a solid day adjusting, tuning, lubing, I disscovered the shifter cable housing is made of AWG metal inside of a plastic outter shell. These have FUSED together and I have to completely replace the cable, housing, retune everything. It's a straight nightmare.
Now I know what you're thinking...this person doesn't take care of their stuff and shouldn't be riding it on the beach and thats what you get.
Okay...well how do you explain our two walmart bikes that were over 10 years old that LIVED outside of a hotel through rain, ans the himidity. Were rusted out. Still shift. Seriously.
My bike is useless. And I am out 300 bucks.
If you purchase this, I recommend just straight replacimg the shifting cables right out of the box with a high quality.
This is my 2nd tandem too and my first one NEVER had these issues.
BTW we have owned a previous tandem bike and so we already knew how fun they can be; but we wanted to upgrade just a bit and we decided to try this Kent Northwoods Bike and we are so glad that we did.
If you have not tried a tandem bike, then you should know that riding on one is one of the most rewarding and inexpensive activities two people can engage in. You can talk, and laugh, and exercise together and it truly can be a relationship building activity. Whether you want to build your relationship or start a new one--this is the way to do it!
For newbies, you really have to give it three times on the back before you give up (being the person on the back can take a little getting used to); however, once you do, it really isn't so bad.
The shipping was fast and the box is large--no damage inside. This model has 21 speeds and the shifting is very nice. Also, it is important to adjust all the seating and handle bars to the higher range of what you think is comfortable (your ride will be better and so will your ability to handle the bicycle).
I made a little adjustment to the chain tensioner wheel (by adding some washers as spacers between the support and the wheel); this reduced the sound substantially making the ride smooth and quiet). Easy for me, but maybe a bit challenging for others--if you need help with assembly, then have that person do it for you.
The braking is great. This bicycle may not consist of parts found on bicycles worth thousands; but it is definitely well worth the price you pay. We live in Utah where the weather changes dramatically and our city encompasses the foothills--lots of hills--and we just love this bike.
If I had any suggestion it would be to add quick releases to the seat adjustments so that you can quickly change heights for different riders--other than that this bicycle is great just the way it is!
Buy with confidence--heck, you can even sell this bicycle for close to what you pay for it if you are one of those impulsive buyers that sometimes buys something and doesn't use it like you thought that you would; but if you just venture out and give this a try, then you will find it one of the more rewarding activities that you can do with someone else that you will remember for a lifetime! Thank you Amazon! This has been the best purchase for us thus far!
