I decided to give them a try, especially since I frequently take pictures outside in the freezing cold.
Even though they're easy to install it does take a little bit of care to make sure that they're centered on the shutter button. I messed up the first one ever so slightly and since I'm a perfectionist, I had to take it off and use the other one, which I was able to center perfectly.
I instantly loved the feel of this on the shutter of my 5DMII. It adds a nice tactile feel to the shutter and makes the half press that much easier. Having used them in the cold quite a bit, I can say they're a great addition and make using the camera in sub freezing temperatures a lot easier.
As far as durability, I can say that I haven't had a single issue with it coming off and its been on my camera for about 12 months now.
This is about the first set I ordered, that is. I liked it so much after the first day I ordered a second pair - which never arrived. Tracking claimed it ended up on my doorstep, which is not true at all. Amazon replaced the money, though this is sold by someone else. I just ordered 2 more pair for my full-frame (on the higher end bodies there are two sets of shutter/back-buttons).
I just placed an order for 2 more pair. I will be using gorilla-glue to secure these to the camera. I go through a camera body every 2 years so I am not concerned about resale of the body.
Why do I keep buying this? As a high volume professional sports photographer, I can take literally 500-1K camera actuations a day. At national events, more than that. My setup consists of 25lbs of Nikon Beast-Mode. These little pads really do help with my right hand and keeps the pain from setting in too quickly.
Great product, the glue isn't worth a darn, so 1 star.
UPDATE: 10.-6.2014
I received the 4th order of DOTS on Thursday, Sept. 30.2014. I added these buttons to my DSLR with SUPERGLUE and let it set till more than enough time to dry. The back=button focus dot - complete with superglue - came off within 10 clicks of the back-button. The top dot stuck for 6 days. During this time, I did 1 event and 10 sporting events.
I am going to attempt to get a refund, but not exactly sure how that will fly since the dots didn't stick? It's not like they came off when I was using them, I'd of felt that.
So here are my thoughts:
Is it pricey? Yes. But for the price I paid ($7.95) for two buttons designed for photography, it's a fair trade. If the price stayed the same or went lower, I wouldn't mind buying it again.
Is it hard to install? No, not exactly, but I believe you would want to stick it on the shutter button correctly the first time because I think it'll last longer that way.
Does it work? Yes. Although it does feel slightly odd at first, taking photos were much more easier than before.
Is it durable? Not sure. I will update in the future if the button lasts long in everyday use. But I do hope it'll last long.
What color should I get? It's on you. I got black because I plan on doing street photography overseas for a month and getting the red one would mean my camera would stand out, which I don't want. Red is a good color though; It looks somewhat like a shutter button from a Leica or if you hand someone your camera all you have to do is say "push that big red button to take the picture" for example.
The cameras I installed the Custom SLR ProDot Shutter Button Upgrade onto is my Nikon 1 V1 and Nikon 1 J1. They both fit perfectly and I'm highly satisfied with the upgrade.
Would I recommend it? It depends on you. If you're not comfortable with your shutter button, then I would recommend getting it. But it's not an absolute necessity for photography.
