Product Description
Ran out of HDMI ports on your HDTV/monitor/projector? Want to reduce the mess of cables connected to it? Fosmon's 3x1 HDMI Intelligent Switch with Pigtail Support will take care of these problems. It has 3 HDMI input sources to provide plug-and-forget auto sensing capabilities that automatically switch inputs when a signal is detected. A button to manually switch between the 3 sources is also built-in. Powered from Connected Devices. No power adapter is necessary to make this switch work, as long as the connected devices supply sufficient power. HDMI cables have the capability to deliver power from connected sources. HDMI Supported Features. Up to 1080p, HDCP 1.0/1.1, 12-bit Deep Color, 3D, and uncompressed/compressed audio formats are some of the newer HDMI features supported on this switch. Gold-Plated Connector:The 24K gold-plated connector on the 20in / 50cm cable resists corrosion and reduces tarnish. Features and Specifications: 3 HDMI inputs / 1 HDMI output , Supports 12-bit Deep color per channel; maximum of 36-bits across all channels , Supports 3D devices , Maximum Single Link Video Range: 1920x1080p, Supports HDCP pass-through , Supports 2.5Gbps/250MHz per channel, maximum bandwidth per display is 7.5Gbps. Supports uncompressed audio such as LPCM . Supports compressed audio such as DTS Digital, Dolby Digital, DTS-HS and Dolby TrueHD. 24k gold-plated connector. Plug-and-forget auto sensing only works correctly for devices that do not output continuous voltage over the HDMI port when turned off. Powering on a device gives it output priority over the other two devices. Output priority is given to the next device on the switch if the current output device is turned off. Make sure the connected devices supply enough power to the switch.Devices that require HDCP 2.2 or higher may be incompatible (e.g. Roku 4).Please use High-Speed HDMI cables that are ≤50ft/15m. 28AWG recommended.

1) If something starts sending power to me, switch to it.
2) If something stops sending power to me, switch back to the last thing that sent me power.
This works really great, because it means that devices that are only on some of the time (your xbox, or a computer that you plug in sometimes), automatically start displaying the moment you turn them on or plug them in, then automatically stop displaying (and go back to whatever was showing before) the moment you turn them off or unplug them.
However...
This system is based on power, not on signal. When your computer turns its screen off, it may be like mine and still be sending power over HDMI, even though there's no signal. In that case, this switcher will NOT switch away from it, and the TV will eventually turn off due to lack of signal, even though there's signal on another port of the switch.
That said, the button on this switch is way smarter than most TV's: it'll only switch between inputs that are sending power. This is really handy if you regularly (like I do) have 2 things plugged into it that are always sending power, you never have to worry about skipping past the unused input. This means you can actually mount the thing behind the TV, where you can't see the lights, and hit the button by feel, and know that you only ever need to hit it once.
The cable coming out of this is SHORT. Like, can barely reach from one side of my TV to the other short. This is ok for my usage, but be aware that you will need an extender if this is going to be somewhere closer to the viewer.
The LED is blue instead of green, and a little too bright, enough to actually leave a flashlight spot on the wall a foot away from it. If you really want your theatre setup to be pitch dark, you'll want to either point it somewhere you can't see, or electrical tape over it.
The ports are spaced wide enough that almost any HDMI cable will fit into them, and a 1st generation chromecast can fit (barely) into one of the side ones without blocking the middle one.
It's silent, doesn't get hot, doesn't distort the signal at all, and the actual switching is near instant from what I can tell.
The switch consists of a 50 cm (19.7 inches) cable attached to a triangular plug that is wider (3.25 inches) at the end which accommodates three full-sized HDMI male cables. On the top of the plug is a small selector button along with three blue LED lights numbered 1, 2, and 3. The LED of the currently active device is lit.
I used the switch to connect two computers and a wireless screen casting device. The displays from all three look exactly the same so there is no loss of visual quality whether plugged in through the switch or connected directly to the monitor.
In this application the switch is powered from the connected devices, so no adapter or batteries are necessary. Since I leave all three devices on, the only way for me to switch is by using the button. But, if I turn-off a device it automatically moves to one of the other connected units that is active.
This switch solved a problem. My monitor has only one HDMI port which is always in use by an essential device. So, to use the monitor with other devices I no longer need to disconnect between them and then reverse the process when done. Now, it is all accomplished with just the press if a button. The unit works flawlessly, is unobtrusive, and saves time.
So let’s get to the bottom of what HD1831 does, what it can do, and what it can’t do.
The Fosmon HD1831 does not have a remote, and you must manually press on the select switch at the top of the splitter to tell the device which input/output application you want to use, and which peripheral is currently turned on. So for example, if your HD television has two HDMI outlets and three DVD players in addition to the cable box, plugged into one of the two TV HDMI outlets, and hooked up through the HD1831, it is advisable to check the menu on the TV to see what is connected to the TV. So if all your players are all connected to this device, and HDMI from the cable box is attached to the second HDMI outlet, the splitter will not know which DVD player you are using unless the input selection is also configured on the TV. Even more confusing is that the peripheral hardware, such as the DVD player must also be turned on for the HDMI1831 to read the signal. And then you will also need to configure the TV to read HDMI signals only, otherwise there will be no sound coming from the TV or the DVD player. In other words, before using this splitter it is necessary to understand how your TV identifies the product you want to use
While connecting HMI cords to a TV is much simpler that the old RCA method, new users of HDMI applications will require you having a little bit of knowledge how to use this relatively new technology. And manufacturers, such as Fosmon, will need to produce better instruction guides aimed at beginners.
All in all this splitter does what is supposed to do, given its inexpensive price, but Fosmon should have included much clearer instructions with large visuals. A tiny directional guide is just not acceptable.
Bottom line if you want to use this product makes sure you have a basic understanding of HDMI compliant TVs, how they operate and how they receive signals from splitters. Having said all this, this splitter is plug_and_play and works just fine,
