3D Video and Audio Return Channel via HDMIFour HDMI inputs on allow seamless integration of high-definition devices such as Blu-ray players, cable/satellite tuners, and gaming consoles. HDMI implementation on this receiver also supports an Audio Return Channel, allowing TV audio to be sent upstream to the A/V receiver. That means you can enjoy television programs in magnificent Onkyo sound. HDMI also supports 3D video and other popular high-resolution formats.
Direct Digital Connection: The Cleanest Your iPod Can Sound
The front-panel USB port lets you play MP3 and AAC stored in an iPod/iPhone, and MP3, WMA, AAC, and FLAC audio files stored on a flash-memory device, using the system's own remote for track selection and playback. Your music will also sound much cleaner and clearer, as the audio signal is transported in digital rather than analog form through the direct digital connection. ONKYO's Proprietary WRAT Technology
WRAT improves the fidelity of amplified audio and reduces noise across the frequency range, guaranteeing a well-balanced performance even with the most dynamic soundtracks. It achieves this by employing a low negative-feedback amplifier design; using "closed" ground-loop circuitry to cancel noise from individual circuits; and by ensuring high instantaneous-current capability. Also Onkyo uses discrete transistors, which help guarantee a consistent, stable supply of current to the speaker system for an open and assured performance. Easy Access For Settings Changes
The overlaid On-Screen Display (OSD) feature makes changing the settings on your A/V receiver quick and easy. On-screen set-up menus appear over the video image you're watching so you can adjust the settings immediately, without having to stop the program and switch to a different screen to access menus.

Setup:
Setup was not as hard as I had feared, although I have to admit that I am only using HDMI devices. Plugged my XBox, BluRay player, Apple TV, and cable box into the HDMI In's (there are 4 of them), plugged the TV into the HDMI out, turned the unit on, pressed the Cable/Sat button, and voila, I had cable reception on my TV. The picture looked as crips as a direct connection, only now I have a single cable running up to my TV instead of four - certainly improves the look of my wall.
The sound didn't work at first, but a quick look into the manual (on the accompanying CD) explained that I had to set my TV to allow for HDMI sound output in order for the sound to work. Never knew this option even existed before, but proved to me that the manual has decent trouble-shooting. I did have sound output now, but only the L Front speaker would work. I fiddled with the wires a bit, reconnecting them on all the speakers and one by one the speakers started working. This is my only ture point of criticism, as the wires are very flimsy and certainly not up to par with the receiver or the speakers. The wires tend to slip out of their connection and getting a good connection at first is just a bit more difficult than it should be. Once they are connected, they stay put and since they are so easy to replace, this won't be an issue in the long-run. Still, some bigger gauge wires would have been appropriate to include.
The system overlays it's menus right onto the TV screen, making it easy to change settings and fine-tune the output. The menus are easy to navigate and no function is unnecessarily hard to find. There are also some buttons on the front of the unit (along with an iPod In and headphone jack), that allow some manipulations while using the unit for pure audio output, but the menu is easier to use and more comprehensive. The manual once more does a good job of walking the user through the steps and I had no problem setting up my sound system to accommodate my room layout. From adjusting the distance of the speakers to the TV, to fine-tuning the treble of selected speakers, there are many possibilities to get the sound just right.
The only negative comment I would like to add about the on-screen menu is the fact that when the system is muted, there is a reminder message on the bottom of the screen that cannot be turned off. It blocks out the score of ESPN-broadcast basketball games, as well as any new-tickers. Why this bar is not blended out automatically, I don't know. This is not a huge issue, but you gotta pick on something and it is an annoyance that is hard to explain.
Sound:
Will be added after some more testing!
Opinion thus far:
Pros
- Easy setup
- Manual has decent trouble-shooting advice and walks user through setup well
- On-screen menu makes it easy to change settings
- iPod connector and head phone jack are located on the front for easy access
- Many options to customize sound settings, especially for surround options
Cons
- Flimsy speaker wires that really should be of a larger gauge
- Message bar overlies bottom part of the TV screen when the system is muted
Unbeatable Value!
Great sound quality
Easy to Install
Configuring/Tweaking is pretty straight-forward
Cons:
Speaker wires are cheap quality
Speakers may interfere with other nearby electronics
Receiver needs "breathing" space
Does not up-convert
My old roommate has an Onkyo home theater system similar to this one, in which I really enjoyed while living with him. So after moving out into my new apartment, I had to get one of my own. I received my package this past Friday and had it hooked up and running in about 30 minutes. After listening to it all weekend, I am once again amazed by Onkyo's awesome work.
As others mentioned, they only include the full manual on a CD. But there is also a quick start guide, which was helpful enough for the installation. All of the speaker wires are color coded, making the connection process quite simple. I read from a few other reviewers that the included speaker wires were not long enough (only 15 feet for the rear speakers). They must have recently fixed that because I received 10-foot wires for all of the front speakers and sub-woofer and 26-foot wires for the two rear speakers. The quality of the wires is pretty cheap, unfortunately. I don’t know if having a higher gauge wire really makes that much of a difference. But for now, I am going to stick with using the included wires and then move up to buying better ones once I buy a house.
I am an avid gamer (XBox 360, PS3, and Wii) and also love watching movies, so having four HDMI inputs is right up my alley. One thing to note is that it does not up-convert other components to HDMI (such as the Nintendo Wii). So whatever type of cable used for input into the receiver must be used for output to the TV. My Wii uses a component cable, so I'll have to buy a second set before playing it with the surround sound. It's a bit of an inconvenience, but I don't play my Nintendo often enough to care. Other than that, playing my other games and watching my Blu-Ray movies and Netflix shows has been great! Even listening to the FM radio is quite enjoyable.
The sound quality isn't going to blow you away like the expensive ones I see on showcase at the stores. But I was still impressed for an entry-mid level system such as this one. The sub-woofer does shake my floor and walls if I turn it up loud enough. But since I live on the second floor of an apartment building, I don't want to abuse that power and anger my neighbors. I haven't had any complaints yet, so I'm hoping that my building is doing a good job absorbing the bass through the walls and floor.
The only problem I had so far is that the speakers don’t seem to be shielded, so they can interfere with other devices if they are nearby. I noticed this when I put the sensor bar for my Nintendo Wii in front of the center speaker. The pointer was moving all over the place on my TV after powering it on. I had to move the center speaker out of the way before I could play. Once again, it’s not a big deal since I don't play my Nintendo that often. The receiver does get quite warm, as others noted. Luckily, I haven't seen it get abnormally hot yet. I do have it sitting on the bottom shelf of my TV stand by itself, so it has plenty of space around it. I also recommend giving the receiver plenty of room. I also would NOT sit anything on top of the receiver (my roommate tried putting his DirecTV receiver on top of it. Before long the DirecTV receiver ended up overheating and powering itself off).
Overall I am very satisfied with my purchase and would highly recommend it for someone looking for a nice entry-mid level system that is easy on the wallet.
