Bought this for a 2 night trip with my LO and dog, in bear country, where nights will hit freezing, to replace my ancient Kelty pack. Both will have their own packs but dog is small(can’t carry much) and kid is young (can’t carry much). In warmer weather, without bears (and bear can) this bag might work. Was hoping to use this this trip and in the future longer trips when I don’t have to carry everything myself. Buying a bigger pack. Really like that it’s so adjustable though.
Note that I am a proponent of ultralight but with a small kid I really do have to bring a change of clothes and extra shoes for her and us being two females I also need to bring additional supplies a guy might not need. Ha! Wondering how my dad did this when I was little!!
UPDATE: So, I tried ordering the 4300 as a replacement and it was terribly uncomfortable even when empty. Turns out, this 3700 has so many straps, is very versatile, and is so well built that I was able to put my kid's sleeping bag in the bottom (unzipped the internal compartment separator) along with some clothes, strapped my sleeping bag to the top of the pack using a single strap, strapped a sleeping pad to the bottom, and clipped a second sleeping pad to a strap, and used the side cinchers for my ground cloth and to clip water bottles, and got it all to fit. (bear can and tent went vertical into the pack, pot/stove on top of the bear can, clothes and smaller items wherever I could fit them) I LOVE this thing. It was so very comfortable, even though I was carrying almost everything for two people. Also has lots of zipper pockets for different items to stay totally safe (car keys) and accessible (toilet supplies). I also liked that it had a little pocket on the waist strap, to put my Kleenex, hand sanitizer, knife, & flashlight. My only two suggested improvements would be to put a pocket on each waist strap (2 waist pockets, I have a daypack like that and it's helpful) and to make the waist pockets big enough to hold my phone. I was using my phone as my camera and although it's a smaller phone it didn't fit in the waist pocket and I ended up carrying it in the back pocket of my pants so that I could grab it out whenever I wanted. PS - I was concerned about rain one night so I pulled out the built-rain cover, put the pack on a rock (so the water would go around the rock and not into the bottom of the pack) and leaned it against a tree. Although it didn't actually rain, it seemed that the rain cover would have adequately protected the pack.
I used to use a (now ancient) external frame Kelty pack. This new Teton was so great that I carried 47 lbs with no problem it practically felt like a day pack. And, I had to ALSO carry kid part of the way - almost 90 lbs total (and I weigh 123). I am a huge fan of this pack. I can't wait to go backpacking again!!
Pros:
-Multiple sections and pouches
-Custom ergonomic support
-Built-in rain fly and chest-snap whistle
-Colors are easily visible
Cons:
-The top flap has several cinch points that can be difficult to open and/or may become tangled
-Rain fly may push water to the straps instead of down the bag away from the shoulders (not tested verified)
-Black back pads cause sweat
The best features IMO are the separate bottom section for sleeping bags, etc., the zipper pouch on the inside of the top flap and the rain fly. I can fit my Teton Journey sleeping bag in the bottom section and still have room for a camping pillow and bag sheets. The upper hidden pouch is great for those items you want to stay dry and out of the way, but may need to reach. While I haven't had the occasion to test the rain fly, it pulls out easily and covers the whole exterior of the bag and it's very easy to roll up for reinsertion into the storage pouch on the bottom of the bag (it is fully removable but is attached to the inside of the bottom of the bag by an elastic band). There are ample straps for accessories as well as a great vertical and horizontal cinch system. The torso length is customizable so that it can fit my 6'2" body or my wife's 5'9", only by tightening the straps on the back of the bag. The waist strap is comfortable for long periods as it is padded in the right areas, and more importantly, the fit is easy to adjust and there's a small zip pouch for granola, keys or small gps, compass or something. I couldn't quite fit my 5" phone in the waist pouch. There's ample space on the waist strap for a phone, knife, hatchet or pistol holster or whatever. A water bladder can be placed in the main pack section in the separated water pouch (running a tube through the pack) or water bottles can be hung on the side of the bag's two bottle holders. The pack holds a good amount of equipment (inside and out) and weight as I've had about 60lbs in it (training hikes) and even my folded up 5-year-old (see above). While I was training the shoulder and back pads caused sweat, but they also dry pretty quick. Over all, I'm very satisfied with the Teton Sports Hiker 3700. I have friends who have spend three times the amount and can't believe the features I have on the Teton. I'm becoming a Teton man, and I bet you will too.
Top reviews from other countries
I'm short at 5' 8", but have an upper body shaped like a barrel so most packs in the 'day' size feel like I have a pack on that's built for someone's first day of kindergarten... I'm very happy how this one fits and carries a load. A friend who backpacks a lot tried it on (he's about 5'10" and skinny like a bean pole and after adjusting it he was happy with how it fit him also, so props to Teton for building a pack that fits different body types well.
Zero issues with build quality, all the zippers work slick, the rain cover is in the bottom compartment like it's supposed to be. There are lots of loops for strapping things on like poles, camera tripod, etc...and the ice axe Velcro loops combined with the bottom loops work great for attaching long items.
I've also used this pack on a few fishing trips (day trips) and it worked nicely carrying food for the day, lots of water, my shoulder bag for fly fishing, a hoodie, raincoat, 4-piece 5wt rod in a tube and the reel, GSI 'Minimalist' cook kit, alcohol burner, and folding stove plus misc stuff like the multitool, compass, bug repellant, small first aid kit, etc. It's large enough to carry everything for a day trip, but was also small enough to be able to wade the river and flyfish with the pack on and not have it getting in the way.
Here's a question for Teton if they're reading this....The loops at the bottom (where the tips of your hiking poles would go, for example) are different sizes. One is larger than the other. First I thought that they just weren't all that careful when they made or attached those loops, but it's intentional....watching videos about this pack (and other Tetons, actually) it appears that all their packs have one loop smaller than the other. Can't be coincidence.....is this just to hold whatever you're carrying snug depending on if it needs a slightly larger or smaller loop you can use the one that fits best? Silly question, maybe....but there's a reason and I'd like to know what it is..
One suggestion is that if you're planning on packing this thing FULL, make sure that you put whatever items that will be in the front and side pockets INTO the pockets before packing the main compartment. Those pockets are 'inies', as opposed to 'outies', so items in those pockets need to take space away from the main compartment. This isn't a fault, or problem, it's just the way it is. And, if it had big protruding pockets, it wouldn't feel as compact and 'out of the way' as it did while I was fishing, pushing through alders, climbing over (or under) deadfalls, etc.
