From the Manufacturer
The players take the role of courtesans of the Nippon emperor. They take care of his Giant Panda by growing a bamboo plantation. Their mission: to farm parcels of land, irrigate them, and have green, yellow or pink bamboo grow. In turn, they see what the weather brings and perform two actions from among those offered to them: get a new plot of land or irrigation channel, grow bamboo, feed the panda or draw an objective card. The game ends when a player has completed 7 to 9 objectives (depending on the number of players). The player who gets the best score by adding the total value of their completed objective wins the game.

This game is an absolute gem and easily pleases many types of gamers, it also is easy to teach and learn so new players need not be left out of having a great experience with this one. As mentioned before the box will draw the eyes of new gamers in your Group or possibly those who aren't as familiar with board games, and thus Takenoko excels at being a wonderful introductory game for them.
There is a great feeling of playing a competitive game with everyone without any of the stress of games with more conflict; everything is very calm and relaxed as players take their actions. Even when someone moves the Panda to eat the bamboo you've been growing for three turns, it's all very fun and forgiving. Who could ever get mad at that hungry little cutey happily munching away at all your hard work? The limited confrontation that is introduced with his mechanic of you choosing to grow bamboo while another player might be choosing to eat bamboo is good friendly fun. Besides, you better believe that afterwards you'll be trying to fulfill your own Panda objective and get them back on your next turn.
This game plays very quickly but still delivers a decent amount of planning and tactics that you can experiment with. I find it a very rewarding game with its charm and beauty being forefront among its qualities. The random element of the die roll at the beginning of your turn can add some additional variety and change to each of your turns, but a lot of your game choices will be a bit of give and take with the other players. It's almost cooperative at times in that some of your actions might secretly be benefiting your opponents and vice versa, again coming back to how simple and relaxed game play is.
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this to anyone, this plays wonderfully at 2 players and above and is quite kid friendly. You'll have no trouble teaching this to anyone and be playing full games in less than 10 minutes or so, most players can even pick up and learn the game just by having experienced players go first. Takenoko may be too light of a game for someone looking for advanced strategy and wanting lots of confrontation and optimization. This game will however be perfect for anyone just wanting to play and explore a lovely bamboo garden, find joy in placing stacking those great pieces higher and higher, or anyone who just saw the Panda and knows they can pop it around the board and gobble up points. This is a winner in our home, and a game that we'll come back to for a long time; we hope you enjoy it as well!

Players earn points by fulfilling the objectives printed on the objective cards they draw. On each turn, players first roll a die for special conditions (themed in the game as weather conditions affecting their bamboo garden), then choose two of the following actions: 1) Adding a new plot of land, 2) Irrigating plots to allow bamboo to grow, 3) Using the gardener to grow more bamboo, 4) Using the panda to eat (remove) bamboo, or 5) Drawing a new objective card. Within these five simple, easy-to-learn actions, there are a plethora of options and strategies to employ, and that's what makes Takenoko so great.
I'm a tabletop gaming nerd and like "crunchy" games, but I played with my mom who is not as familiar with this type of game. We made a few rules mistakes early in our first game, but very quickly overcame the learning curve. Aside from being visually appealing, the instruction booklet is extremely accessible and helps delineate the rules very clearly. Whenever we needed clarification I was always able to find the answer by checking the booklet and in the end there was zero confusion or head scratching over what the rules were. We played four games and tied 2-2. It's very balanced and seems not too difficult to teach to younger players or players new to Euro games, but not too simple, and challenging enough for more seasoned players.
If you like heavily themed games, Takenoko will not disappoint. I have to honestly say it is the most beautiful and well-constructed game I own. The plots are modular hexagonal tiles printed on a very sturdy cardboard and the bamboo is actual, handpainted wooden sections that interlock to stack. The artwork is beautiful, depicting various bamboo forests, water features, and gardens, and the Farmer and the Panda are plastic miniatures that actually come painted right out of the box (!). On top of that, the box itself is very well organized with a molded plastic insert with separate fitted spaces for each type of card/tile/piece; and the full-color instruction booklet actually has a comic on the front explaining the backstory of the game. I really can't say enough about the construction and presentation of this game. It is extremely detailed and high quality and definitely worth the price.
What makes it even more valuable, however, is that it is a beautiful game that is also fun! Takenoko somehow manages to never compromise on style OR substance. I am extremely pleased with this game and can't wait to introduce it to more of my friends.
