Canon EOS 7D Highlights
18.0-megapixel CMOS sensor and Dual DIGIC 4 image processors
The EOS 7D features a Canon-designed 18.0-megapixel APS-C size CMOS sensor that captures such a high level of resolution it's easy to crop images for enlargement without concern of losing detail. A major factor in reducing noise, the CMOS sensor assures that images shot at highest sensitivity will be remarkably smooth. Dual DIGIC 4 Image Processors ensure that images are captured, processed and saved with remarkable speed. The EOS 7D's ability to capture and process data of images shot at 18.0 Megapixels at 8 fps, as well as Face Detection Live Mode, Full HD video recording, Auto Lighting Optimizer and Lens Peripheral optimization are all possible thanks to the Dual DIGIC 4 Image Processors.
ISO 100-6400 (expandable to 12,800) for shooting from bright to dim light
With a broad range of ISO settings, the EOS 7D enables shooting from dawn through dusk and ensures capture of the finest detail. With enhanced, low-noise high-sensitivity optimization, shooting in situations previously possible only with flash becomes as simple as point and shoot.
8.0fps continuous shooting up to 126 Large/JPEGs with UDMA CF card and 15 RAW
Capable of shooting up to 126 Large/JPEGs with a UDMA CF card and 15 RAW at 8 fps, the EOS 7D is a perfect camera for action. Canon's remarkable shutter, combined with speedy, sophisticated electronics, ensures instant response and performance. A rapidly-occurring scene can be captured moment by moment, second by second, so that even the briefest of opportunities are captured in perfect clarity.
Capture action as it happens
Advanced movie mode with manual exposure control and selectable frame rates
Boasting the most advanced EOS movie capturing features to date, the EOS 7D does not just shoot video clips, it offers the enhanced image quality, smooth frame rates and adaptive exposure compensation necessary in a professional movie-making tool. By shooting video with a large sensor camera, it's simple to take advantage of the image characteristics intrinsic to SLR photography and not necessarily to video cameras. In addition to a number of different recording size and frame rate modes, the EOS 7D enables easy manual control of exposure, focus and Live View features and even allows for in-camera editing. The large CMOS sensor and compatibility with over 60 lenses provide a wealth of depth-of-field options. And it's all as easy as the press of a button--the EOS 7D has a dedicated Live View/Movie Recording lever with a start/stop button that gets the shooting started fast.
Three recording sizes for video Full HD Video is captured at 1920 x 1080 resolution at 30p (29.97), 24p (23.976) or 25p frames per second, for up to 4GB per clip. Movies are saved as .MOV files and can be viewed in Full HD with HDMI output. Other recording sizes include HD at 1280 x 720 (50p / 60p (59.94) fps) or SD/VGA at 640 x 480 (50p / 60p (59.94) fps).
Intelligent Viewfinder with 100% field of view and wide viewing angle
The EOS 7D features a phenomenal redesigned viewfinder that not only offers 100 percent coverage, 1x magnification, a 29.4-degree angle of view and user-controlled dioptric adjustment, it also features a newly-designed transparent LCD display which enables a number of viewfinder displays to be overlaid at the touch of a button. Whereas with other cameras the representation of AF points and metering areas are static, with the EOS 7D, they can be displayed, adjusted and hidden, in camera, with ease. This means less distraction and more clarity to view the image in its entirety. Display options include: grid, spot metering, AF points display, hide all, zone AF, spot (single-point) AF, AF point expansion and Dual Axis Electronic Level display.
The EOS 7D even features a brilliant new Dual Axis Electronic Level and tilt display that aids in achieving perfectly level shots, displaying both roll and pitch in 1-degree increments, either in the viewfinder or on the LCD
New 19-point, all cross-type AF system equipped with dual diagonal cross-type sensors
Canon packed its most advanced technologies into the EOS 7D's AF system. With 19 high precision, cross-type AF sensors, any of which can be selected automatically or manually, the EOS 7D is equipped to handle even the trickiest of focus situations with ease. The high-speed microcomputers in the EOS 7D use advanced algorithms that help ensure the fastest, most accurate AF performance under the widest variety of conditions. In addition, Canon's Light Source detection AF automatically compensates the focus by taking into account artificial lighting sources and making appropriate adjustments and the EOS 7D's new Intelligent Macro focusing tracks the object or the cameras movement when shooting close-up, to ensure focus is never lost. AF modes can be customized to suit the situation, ensuring reliable focus, every time.
iFCL Metering with 63 zone dual-layer metering sensor
The EOS 7D features a new, 63 zone dual-layer sensor designed to complement the 19-point AF system. By taking into account the color and luminosity surrounding chosen AF points, this new system delivers an entirely new level of accuracy for better results even in difficult lighting situations. Since the metering sensor has a color measurement function, exposure errors and focus errors caused by different light sources are minimized; the EOS 7D gives stable exposure from shot to shot in situations where light changes, such as in a theater or concert hall. This makes the EOS 7D ideal for scenes with extreme difference in brightness such as brightly lit scenes or backlit scenes; the camera balances exposure of the main subject at the background, and exposures are not overly influenced by bright areas in the shot.
Magnesium body with shutter durability up to 150,000 cycles
The EOS 7D is constructed of the highest quality materials, to exacting standards to ensure unfettered performance at all times. For example, the shutter can shoot at speeds up to 1/8000 sec for 150,000 cycles; the chassis is built of lightweight and rigid magnesium, and the camera's seals are built to resist water and dust. This combination makes the EOS 7D will be ready for anything.

My intention when buying the camera was mostly bird photography, so I also bought the 100-400 mm L zoom lens. My interests also extend to close ups, and the 60-mm macro lens got added to the package. Since then I've added only two more lenses to my kit: the 10-22 mm EF-S wide angle and a used Sigma 600-mm mirror lens. Accessories? Oh, yes, we have accessories!
One problem with APS-C sensors is greater image noise, especially at higher ISOs. The EOS 7D produces very low-noise images at ISO 800, though I rarely go there. While photographing a night-time prescribed fire in Jonathan Dickinson State Park I kicked the ISO up to 6400, and shot with the 10-22 mm EF-S lens wide open (f/3.5 to f/4.5). Those shots were for the web, and even at 1200-px width the noise is bearable. In fact, for something as dramatic as a night-time forest fire the noise seems to add veracity. Most of the time I shoot at ISO 100 or 200, and large prints look wonderful. (Don't handicap yourself with cheap filters or a flimsy tripod. Accessories can add significantly to the start-up costs of a system like this, so figure them into your budget from the beginning. If you're just getting into DSLR photography, stick with the camera and 'kit' lens, and get a high-quality clear or UV filter. I always recomend a tripod, but good ones are pretty expensive. Autofocus and image stabilization may make tripods seem irrelevant, but tripods make you slow down and pay attention to the shot. That would be a good next purchase.)
The sensor and in-camera processing are important, but so is the lens. The supplied 28-135 is acceptable, though not on par with better fixed-focal-length lenses. Its greatest fault is the 6-blade iris, which causes sub-par background blur, but I've been able to fix that up pretty well using Photoshop's "Lens Blur." If your program has Gaussian blur and you know how to work with layers, you can fix the problem so most people won't notice, and the lens does have its benefits.
For one, it focuses down to about 20 inches (0.5 m), which is very useful if you're a nature photographer. Schneider makes a +2 diopter achromatic (dual-element) close-up lens with the right thread, and that lets me focus down to about 10 inches, even at 135-mm (more than 200-mm equivalent on a full-frame 35-mm camera). (Canon makes an equivalent achromatic +2 diopter lens but at this writing you can't get a new one in the U.S., and used ones are commanding high prices.) I've gotten some astounding photos of dragonflies and other insects with this combination. The depth of field is limited, so you need a tripod, and it doesn't hurt to manually focus.
Ah, here's the thing: If you're an automatic-camera type, the 7D probably isn't for you. Yes, it has built-in options that will think for you, but you can get them for less on, say, a 60D or a point-and-shoot. The 7D is a photographer's camera, like a Porsche is a driver's car. I've never used the full-automatic features and don't miss them. I tend to use Aperture Priority, and set Exposure Compensation to underexpose by one-half f/stop. I also use the Histogram to look for potential problems (you can see the Histogram before shooting by switching to Live View mode, which you can do by pushing one button on the back of the camera).
One feature I especially like is the ability to shoot at 8 frames per second. Great for birds in flight and butterflies. If you shoot only JPEG-format, an 8-GB CF card holds more than 1000 images. If you shoot RAW+JPEG you can store about 250 images on an 8-GB card. As I don't do sports photography, occasionally changing memory cards in the field is not a big problem, and if a card goes bad, I'll lose fewer images. I have two SanDisk cards and alternate them, and so far, no problems. I download images to my PC via the USB connection.
I did have a problem with the camera, though it was my fault. The body is claimed to be water resistant, but that's not exactly right. I shot outside all summer here in South Florida, and a couple of times I dripped perspiration on the flash hot shoe. I _thought_ I wiped it off, but some must have gotten inside and corroded the hot-shoe terminals. The camera thought there was always an 'unidentified' external flash on board, so the internal flash wouldn't come on. And it wouldn't recognize my Canon 580EX II flash when I slid it into the hot shoe, though I still could use the flash. This problem cost me $450 to fix, but Canon had the camera back to me in less than two weeks, and their website kept me informed of its progress through the repair facility.
Since I got the camera I launched a website devoted to the natural history of the county I live in, which means taking lots of photos of flowers, plants, trees and insects, as well as my favorites, birds. It's the nature of APS-C sensors to produce greater depth of field, which is overall a benefit when shooting close ups. Getting wide with an APS-C sensor means using an extreme lens, but the 10-22 mm EF-S (usable only on APS-C cameras) does the job. Never have I wished for a full-frame DSLR (only the $$$ to afford one!). If the market recovers I will probably buy a second 7D, so I don't have to change lenses when that neat bird flies over while I'm hunched down shooting a flower with the macro lens. I would definitely recommend the EOS 7D to any photographer with interests similar to mine. I studied the manual and purchased a copy of David Busch's book, which travels with me in the car. Take the time to learn the camera and don't be afraid to try different settings (keep notes so you know what you were doing when you review the photos). Most of all, get out and shoot shoot shoot!
I've been drooling over this camera for years, and finally I got one! Obviously, I'm not a pro, nor do I make significant money as a photographer. This is a big hobby for me, and perhaps when I acquire enough skill, a post-retirement part time job.
The Canon 7D is, of course, pure awesome. Outstanding low light performance, solid feel and controls, and a lovely heavy lens. It also shipped with the latest firmware, which was thoughtful.
I upgraded from the Canon 20D, and this operates, well, like a much newer camera...way more intuitive settings menu, all kinds of cool buttons and switches, and of course much faster.
It still uses Compact Flash cards, which, in theory, I like better than SD cards. That theory ends, however, when one compares prices of comparable capacities of CF and SD cards. I'm using a CF to SD card adapter, and so far it works wonderfully with a 32gb SD card. I have a 128gb SD card coming in soon, and if I have problems with that, I'll update this review.
The lens is sweet. Of course, I'm not a snob, sticking my nose up at any lens that costs less than a used car...after all, one would be hard pressed to find a historically famous picture that was taken by a bank busting lens. This one focuses quickly and directs the proper photons to the proper place. The IS function makes it easier on low light shots, which is what attracted me to Canon in the first place.
My other lenses shine on the 7D as well, of course.
I took the old, worn, faded strap off my 20D and placed it on this. Why? I'm not a showoff, especially when those most interested in my camera are those looking to steal it. I much prefer folks think I'm using an old, almost obsolete camera...which is why I'll be buying an old fishing tackle bag or some other ugly-but-functional container to carry my gear around. A brand new bag that says Canon on it is like an eye magnet for dirtbags.
I took one star off. Canon, for all it's greatness, is not immune to senseless greed. My old Promaster 7500EDF flash will not function with this camera, though it works wonderfully with my old 20D. I'm looking into updating the firmware on the Promaster, but until I do that, or buy another flash, I'm stuck without one. Sorry, but I've never seen anything satisfactory come from the built in flash.
I called Canon regarding this issue, and to their credit I quickly found a human to talk to. They shut me down as soon as I said "Promaster." They said the camera won't talk to the old flash, and that I need to call Promaster. I normally consider this a blow-off, however after some research they appear to be correct.
People at Canon, please pay attention: I just spent a good chunk of change on your camera, a good chunk of change on the last one, and more chunks of change on accessories, and other point-and-shoots. Please note that I bought this camera in 2014, rather than in 2009 when I first started slobbering over it. I didn't wait 5 years because I like 5 year old technology better than brand new stuff. I'm not wealthy. Not being wealthy, I can't afford the latest and greatest. This also means I can't afford to spend hundreds of dollars on new flashes...not to mention batteries?!? Really? Someone decided moving tiny plastic rails and contacts on a battery made the 7D better than the 20D? Note that the more expensive you make it to upgrade to your new models, the more likely someone is going to go with Nikon, and those customers get lost forever.
Yes, this is annoying. The unwritten rule of gadgets is, when something becomes an acronym, it becomes a standard. TTL, and E-TTL are, or at least should be, a standard, and one should expect a TTL flash will work on a camera capable of TTL communication, especially when it's the same brand of camera.
Please don't be too greedy. Backwards compatibility has been a great benefit to technology companies (IBM for one). You'll make absolutely no extra money off of me for this nonsense, but you have left a bad taste in my mouth.
Ok, enough of the Flash Rant.
Note that your old flashes may not work with this camera.
I'm not returning it, so obviously I'm still thrilled with this camera.
I haven't tried the video function yet, so I can't comment on that. Same goes with the software.
In an impressive display of God's sense of humor, it has been raining since I first opened the box. Of course I know a little rain won't hurt this, but I'm not about to take my shiny new expensive camera out in the soggy weather...much less stick my tripod in the mud. There's no doubt I'm looking forward to some awesome nature night shots. And once I get the flash situation handled (Grrr!) I'll get to finally retire the 20D.
Highly Recommend!
