I did some more tests the following day, running both resolution and modulation transfer function tests, and found this lens to be comparable to many of the prime lenses that I have in my inventory. For the nominal price of this lens, I have also been surprised by the excellent quality of construction, including the aluminum barrel, and finely machined lens mount, something that I look for in a good lens.
Over the weekend, I took this lens out to our marina, and took a photo of an incoming storm and after receiving strong reviews for this on my FB page, I uploaded the photo to one of our local TV stations, where it appeared on the Monday weather segment. Showing this camera around the marina, I already have a project through my website, [...] which will pay for this lens, multiple times over.
As I work with Pentax's, I love the coupling of this lens to the camera's auto exposure system. I understand that this feature is not incorporated in the Canon or Nikon versions ( I stand to be corrected, if that is in error ). Focus on this lens is manual, but in daylight, it seems to capture everthing from a foot forward to infinity, when the camera is focused at the 10' setting. As well, the camera seems to work perfectly with the image stabilization system built into the body of the Pentax K200D, one of the reasons which I choose to work with Pentax camera bodies.
With a Pentax K5 on my wish list in the next few months, I look forward to this becoming one of my main lenses for the future.
Beside, the reaction that I get from people when they see that big peace of glass .... WOW !... is worth the price of this lens by itself.
The glass is nice and images for the most part are crisp. As other reviewers have noted the lens does not have auto focus, I like it that way personally. It's not too hard to know where to set your focus with this lens (obviously depending on which application you are using it for). Day shots are good although it has a soft spot for sun glare and while it's not unbearable it can be somewhat of a nuisance. Night shots are good as well, makes for very unique and fun city/landscape pictures! Obviously with lights there is some lens flare but that is to be expected.
I have also been impressed with the construction of the lens. Slightly bulky but very sturdy. Recently I was taking photos of an amateur skateboarder and my worst fear was realized when his board flung out from under him and straight toward my lens! The board hit the hood...hard. Looked the lens/camera over, made sure everything worked right...not a scratch! The optics were fine and the lens hood was unscathed. Let's just say that I was very lucky that day haha!
One thing that stands out as well (this pertains strictly to the T2i) is that there is no vignetting in the corners. Personally I like some vignetting while FILMING with my Sony VX's but not when I'm taking photos. The barrel distortion is great, for maximum effect you have to get very close to your subject which is nice but can also be slightly risky if you're taking action sports pictures (refer to paragraph above). For the wider type of shots (lanscapes, family portraits, etc.) the lens performs well. Adequate distortion with nice clarity.
By the way this is not a zoom-through fisheye. Slap it on and that's it!
Altogether I feel that this is a great fisheye for the price. I'm sure in the future I'll upgrade to a higher quality fisheye but for now this lens is satisfactory. For anyone that needs a great fisheye on a budget this is the lens for you~
Top reviews from other countries
There is an instruction card that warns of using the lens wide open, and recommends using f 5.6 is widest setting to achieve best focus. At 3.5 the focus is a little soft. 5.6 - and up the picture is razor sharp, and for landscapes and buildings this lens gives a great picture with lots of distortion at the sides, something that is desirable on a fisheye lens. It adds to the creative aspect of such a wide view. Going to result in some great landscape pictures for me.
This is a very fun lens to use! And the build quality is extremely high, especially considering the low price.
Note: I have 2 cameras, a D300s and a D5100. Although it works on both, on the D5100 it only works in Manual mode. The D300s seems to work in all modes, but some set-up was required in the camera's menu. If you know what you're doing you won't have a problem, but it's not as easy to use as lenses without an aperture ring.
