It's bulky and hard to figure out at first (KEEP THE INSTRUCTIONS!!!!!!), but highly effective. Many other reviews have mentioned that it's hard to wear on their wrist seeing as it's bulky and you can't lay on your arm at all. I agree with them - I sleep on my stomach and side and the Shake'N'wake is just too big to be comfortable like that. But if you continue reading another reviewer mentioned putting it on their ankle instead - this works like a charm. Plus, I have a habit of taking off what ever is annoying me in my sleep, and it's much more difficult to do this when it's so far from my hands.
I gave this product 5 stars because it does actually wake me up more than normal alarms - without waking my entire neighborhood up with those insanely loud alarm clocks. Although I do pair it up with a regular normal desk alarm clock (just to be safe) and the combination works perfectly.
However when the latest one passed away, I came onto Amazon, as I had to purchase the other 3, to discover that the product was no longer available in their store, and I could not even find a way to purchase it from their seemingly official site.
So I discovered this product, the closest thing to what I actually wanted (a vibrating alarm to go under my pillow and wake me up each morning before work)
1) the device shakes momentarily EVERY hour on the hour. That could not be any more annoying to my girlfriend who spends many nights with me and is not hard of hearing. Also, WHY is that feature even there?
2) while my girlfriend was not around (she would wake me up when a audible alarm went off instead), I would use the alarm clock, however, there was no real snooze option (that I could find, which I also used a LOT on the ShakeAwake device), and the vibration was so unnoticeable under the pillow, that I ended up having to use the vibration from my iPhone as a secondary backup to wake me up in case this device didn't.
3) For a short while, the alarm simply wasn't going off. I couldn't figure out why for a few days until I noticed that in the middle of the night, or during one of my wake ups, the alarm's switch changed from vibrate to audio... the switch moved way too easily, and I could've been late to work multiple days if it wasn't for my backup alarm.
4) By this time, I completely shunned this device and I have been using my iPhone, a device unintended for this role for a hard of hearing person, which has performed this job far better than the alarm ever has. However, I'd prefer NOT to use my iPhone for this role and have a dedicated device for waking me up.
5) Sure, there's an option to wear it on your wrist, but the last thing I need is something uncomfortable on my wrist as I try to sleep.
Honestly, I'd prefer to return this device, however, it's not really on any fault of the product itself, it's not defected. It just isn't for me.
Looking forward to the ShakeAwake device becoming available in the store again, or at the least finding another store that I can actually purchase it from.
I use this alarm because IT WORKS. It has changed my life for the better.
I am hearing impaired. When not wearing my hearing aids (every night) I cannot hear a standard audible alarm. My old method for waking up was: 1) set alarm for 4:30 AM. 2) alarm sounds and wakes wife. 3) Wife kicks me to wake me up to turn off alarm.
This method worked well for a long time. She never complained (bless her heart), but I sure felt like a jerk waking her up so early every morning. I was also faced with a serious dilemma every time she was not there when I needed to wake up.
This alarm solved all of that.
Pros:
1) This thing works. The vibration is very strong. I am a very deep sleeper and this thing is strong enough to pull me from even the best dreams.
2) This clock is very affordable.
3) Battery life is amazingly good.
Cons:
[As with all alarm clocks I've had in my life, I have a love-hate relationship with this thing too.]
1) Controls: A standard complaint is the unnecessarily complicated and non-intuitive method for adjusting this thing. As an engineering making a living designing electronics, this thing makes me growl in disgust at whoever designed the controls (Come on man, you're making the rest of us look bad!) So yes, keep the instruction book handy.
2) Snooze: I confess, I love the snooze button (What? It's 4:30 AM! Cut me some slack!). This alarm has a 5-minute snooze button that works as many times as you care to push it. Watch out though, there are 4 buttons on this thing. Any of the other buttons turn the alarm off. Sometimes in my sleep-hazed stupor, I feel like I'm trying to figure out if I should clip the red wire or the green wire on explosive device strapped to my arm. Don't choose the wrong one! You might get some extra sleep, but you'll also be late for work.
3) Weak clip: The plastic clip that hooks the alarm to the wrist strap is not very strong. After a few months of use, I found that sometimes in the night, the alarm would fall off the strap. Sure, a sudden vibration in my armpit will wake me up fine, but the time it fell off onto the floor wasn't very helpfull. Eventually I put a piece of strong tape over the end of the clip to prevent is from falling off. My clip finally broke and I had to replace the alarm.
4) Bulky: This thing is large and bulky. I'm certain the clip was weakened over time by normal tossing and turning. If you ever wake up with your arm under your pillow, you'll understand. Put this on and try that little maneuver and you'll encounter some seriouse resistance.
5) Unreliable: I hate to even say this for fear you won't purchase this alarm because of it, but about once every 2 or 3 months, this alarm just doesn't work for me. I wake up (late) and find that the alarm is set just like it should be, but I didn't wake up on time. It is most likely that I turned off the alarm in my sleep (see "Snooze" complaint), or was possibly inadvertantly pressing one of the other buttons in my sleep (the buttons are recessed to help prevent that). Bottom line is that I still keep my old alarm/wife/kick/wake-up as a backup just in case. I set my old alarm for several minutes later than this alarm. 99% of the time everything works fine, but that backup has saved me several times over the past couple years.
Even though I have far more Cons than Pros, I still love this alarm. It has seriously changed my life for the better.
Top reviews from other countries
Can highly recommend.
1. It's VERY non-intuitive to use: the buttons for adjusting the time or alarm are not labelled the way they should be, and you have to push a combination of things to get to the setting you want to change. I had to keep the instructions and refer to them repeatedly...when was the last time you needed to use the instructions to set a clock?
2. It randomly turns off in the night: there's a switch to go from sound to buzz, and it sometimes gets caught in the middle (probably from rubbing against the sheets while I sleep) and then it makes no alarm whatsoever.
3. The vibrate alarm is WAY too loud and intense: I got this so it wouldn't wake my baby (she sleeps in our room) when I get up for work, but the buzzing of the vibration alarm woke her up a couple times. Now I just use a free app on my iPhone, it works much, much better.
4. This thing is HUGE! Imagine a pager from the 1980's - now sleep with that velcroed to your ankle...forget about putting something this big on your wrist.
5. Speaking of Velcro...the Velcro on the strap sometimes gets caught on my bedding. This may not be an issue for everyone.
This is the only review I have ever written from the hundreds of products I have bought on Amazon...it really is this bad.
