I been using this product for years and my acid loving plants, including Holly‘s rhododendrons and hydrangeas love it! They remain healthy and thriving.
Don't get me wrong, I love espoma's composts. "Value" for the money is a tricky question because it's actually a little pricey for a waste compost from chicken pens. "Smell" is another tricky question because it has an aroma in the bag, but it's nowhere near as bad as cow poop compost. I use it on outdoor plants and trees so aroma isn't really an issue for me. I like to mix smaller amounts of different kinds of compost together when feeding for a more nutritionally complete feeding, and Espoma's holly tone is very often in the mix.
The leafs of the shrubs and azaleas outside our new house started turning YELLOW, upon researches, it could be due to (1) Soil is too alkaline and not acidic enough; (2) Too much water; (3) Fungus. So I put this with compost/top soil around my shrubs (dug out the area around each of them, then put the mixture inside); (2) Later we found a leak in our irrigation system and fixed it, decreased the water level. Now all our shrubs look healthy and I believe this helps a lot because shrubs do love acidic soil. The only complaint about this is it is too dusty, you almost have to wear a mask when applying it.
I’ve used this product on indoor plants (a teaspoonful) and outdoor plants (a cup full). I have a delicate fern and a fiddle leaf fig that I thought I was losing. Both indoor plants have came back and are healthy. I use this on outdoor shrubs and my tree, They look gr8. Healthy and full.
After this last winter in Chicagoland, my young (planted fall of 2012) holly bushes looked as if they weren't going to make it. They looked half dead with about 25% totally brown. I did not cut the branches with all those dead leaves, but instead carefully plucked as much of the dead leaves as possible. I had read somewhere that I should wait to cut as the branches might not be dead.
I then used this Holly-tone and waited and watched. All but one of those dead looking branches soon began new growth ..... heavy new growth. My bushes look wonderful.
Now here's the thing ..... I have a couple of other holly bushes, planted at the same time, at a different part of the yard. They looked pretty good so I didn't use the Holly-tone on those bushes. Well, they did not achieve the new healthy growth that my 'sick' looking bushes did. The half-dead looking bushes that I did use the Holly-tone look much healthier with much more new growth.
Needless to say, I purchased some more Holly-tone and used it just last week on those other bushes.
Espoma's stuff is made in New Jersey.. New Jersey, the garden state, is known regionally for great blueberries. This is the feed of choice for local blueberry growers. If your plan is to grow blueberries, you found a great product!
