That having been said, I tested out the stand with the load yesterday and it performed quite well. The stand actually has some pretty long legs so it has decent stability. Part of the problem of using a boom arm is that there is a significant moment introduced because the supported weight is so far from center. However, it worked OK. I did have to put a weight (suitcase, chair, etc.) on the leg extended opposite the boom arm to keep the stand from trying to tip. This is not the fault of the stand, it is simple physics. My only area of long term concern is with the clamps that tighten to hold each telescoping section in place once they are extended. The "t" handles and the straps themselves are plastic. Thus, there will likely come a day, hopefully far in the future, when they are going to crack and fail. However, I already have a contingency plan formulated. Metal hose clamps are available from Home Depot for about $1 each and should fit the bill if and when that day comes. Again, this has not happened yet and I am not faulting the product for a problem it has not yet shown but with the excess strain I am putting on it beware.
In summary, this product does everything it is supposed to do. Sadly, like everything, it is made in China but appears to be well constructed. If you are going to use it within its designed load limits I would say it is superb. You will not find anything out there that is this portable yet offers this much size. I definitely recommend it. Be advised that if you want to use it as a mic stand you will need to purchase a thread adapter to allow the mic or boom arm to screw onto the top screw post on this stand.
I've been using some JTL stands that came with some cheap strobes purchased years ago. The 5001B stands surpass them in every way. 1st, they are compact and I can hang one on each side of my Canon camera backpack without worrying they are going to tear the straps off. There minimum height is exceptional considering their maximum height is so high. Easy to pack, fold up and extend. I wish I had found these sooner but I'm so glad I did. If your looking for something compact, sturdy and durable I'd highly recommend these. I'm waiting on some other equipment to arrive from Amazon and as soon as get them I'll post pictures of these stands side by side with my Canon flash heads mounted with various diffusers and accessories attached. Theres not much that I could say that hasn't already been said by other posters other than since the legs can lay flat I can slide them under couches and hide them much better than the normal inverted V shape that most stands utilize. You can also configure them in the inverted V angle if you desire. One tip, if you do run the legs flat on the floor make sure that they are FLAT. It's easy to tighten them in a position where the legs are slightly upward which will make them a bit wobbly and unstable. This is not a fault of the design and it's worth having a stand that will lay flat so long as you make sure they are indeed flat. If you want the ultimate compact stand and it's max and minimum height and price meet your needs look no further. These reek of quality.
When fully collapsed, it measures no more than the length of the feet (19") so it is very compact and easily transported. I highly recommend this Manfrotto tripod, it is of the same high quality design and build as the other Manfrotto products I own.
