For the budget price ($145), I was quite surprised to receive a player in some of the nicest packaging I've seen, and with a nice weight to the player itself. Build quality feels quite good, and it works beautifully with everything I've thrown at it so far. This player will actually play all sorts of video file formats on a USB flash drive or external hard drive via its USB port.
I don't think they have released a firmware update in over two years. Not only does it have trouble playing some newer discs, but I can't even get Captain America to get past the menu screen. It totally hosed the player and I had to unplug it and plug it back in several times before I could get the tray to open. I have learned two things from my experience with this player:
1 - No more Memorex products. This may be unfair, maybe they have other products which are, you know, GOOD, but there are plenty of manufacturers out there and I don't have time and money to waste.
2 - No more cheapo players. The essentially disposable DVD players they have now are OK, but my next Blu Ray is not going to be below market value. Maybe I spend too much that way, but if I pay more for a Sony and they actually update the software so I can actually watch new discs, it's worth it.
If a cheap blu ray player is the only way you can afford to get one, I'm sorry, but save yourself the headaches. It's not worth it.
What a disappointment. This cost me about $250, and even though this is now on sale here on Amazon for $125 (pre-shipping), it isn't a bargain even at this price. I wanted a progressive scan Blu-ray Disc player with 1080p capability for HD video for a second TV set and, even though this wasn't one of the higher rated models, I thought it would do for the limited use it would get. I like that it has HDMI specs that support HDCP, DVD up-conversion up to 1080p, 16:9 / 4:3 picture select, on-screen graphical user interface and slow motion function.
Unfortunately, slow motion function is about the only thing Memorex perfected in this model as it is frustratingly slow in everything it does. When first turning on the power, this player takes longer to "boot up" than a desktop PC. Just waiting for the tray to open takes patience and restraint. By the time it finally gets to the point where it is ready to play the movie don't be surprised if half the popcorn is gone. I strongly suggest you keep looking and pass on this player - wish I had. And if you are for whatever reason still on the fence, check out the following from the product page for the model on the Memorex web site:
"Some newer Blu-Ray movies have incorporated changes to digital rights management (DRM) that are not supported by earlier model Blu-ray players, including the Memorex MVBD Blu-Ray players. If you are experiencing an issue where older Blu-ray and DVD movies play properly while newer Blu-ray discs do not, this is likely the problem. The Memorex MVBD2510 player was discontinued in 2009 and updates are no longer available. While the Memorex MVBD2510 will continue to work for your older Blu-ray discs and DVDs, it may be necessary to replace the unit to play these newer Blu-ray movies."
I've had this player for about four months, it works just fine but isn't perfect. If you want all the bells and whistles get a Sony blu-ray player and pay the extra $100 to $200.
If you just want a basic blu-ray player to watch movies and don't care about extras this player will do. In comparison with the Sony blu-ray player that I have on the TV in my bedroom it is very slow. When you turn it on it takes a minute or two trying to load a disc and then it tells you that there is no disk. Once you load the disk it takes a minute or two to read the disk.
Updating the firmware is a chore. If you need to do this you can find it on the memorex website. Make sure that you download the firmware for the correct model. If you have a MAC you might not be able to do this, I tried to do it on my MAC and it didn't work. I had to do it on my PC.
Once you've downloaded the firmware you've got to unzip the file. Burn the contents of the folder to a CD-R (not CD-RW). Don't burn the entire folder to the CD-R, just the files inside of it or the player won't recognize it as a firmware disk.
If you do this you should be able to play even the newest blu-ray disks. I've noticed a lot of reviews that complain about this player not playing all blu ray disks and I believe that it's because the firmware hasn't been updated. That was the case for me.
It did not want to play Batman & 310 to Yuma. I downloaded the filmware from memorex web site, installed it and it works great. Excellent picture easy to use and good quality. The only thing I don't like about it is you have to wait until it looks for a disk before it will open the door.
I got my Memorex 2510 2 days ago, and I am VERY happy I got it. I got it at Amazon, through Ritz Camera. Best part..I paid $149, brand new. Its is a snap to setup, picture is beautiful. I watched Blu Ray "Top Gun" yesterday and Blu Ray "The Dark Knight" today, both played flawlessly. Memorex proves you don't have to spend $400 for a good Blu Ray player. Thank you Amazon, Ritz Camera, and of course Memorex.

Aside from the general headaches of the Blu-Ray systems, such as slooow starts... this is the worst player I have ever seen. I have had mine for a couple years(?). I have had to install 2 updates. I'm currently on update Sept09 (today is 9/2/2010). Today I could not play "Date Night". I checked for a new update.... nothing. The update instructions were atrocious. I had to try at least three times and took over an hour for the first update. You should hear the noise it makes now.... loud! Memorex released this inferior product and does not support it. Never again. There are enough other Brands that I never have to buy another Memorex product. Memorex MVBD2510 BR player.
Update 1/29/2011 - I double checked. It's been 2 years of misery. It still plays 95% of the BR discs. Still very loud. It hasn't died yet. So freaking slow. No new updates since Sept 2009. The model 2510 is considered a discontinued model. It is getting more and more difficult to find the support page. Try: [...]
