High Tensile Steel with a Precise FitThe foundation of the M19 is the materials that comprise the frame and tools themselves. The frame is lightweight and durable 6061-t6 precipitation hardened aluminum alloy, with side grips on the either side for a secure handhold even with gloves on. The tools themselves are high tensile steel, hardened for extreme durability and made to withstand even the most drastic climates. Top it all off with three different finish options and you have the pinnacle of multi-tools. |
Stainless Steel Tool Flask IncludedCrank Brothers not only wants to provide a durable and effective multi tool, they also want it to be convenient. That’s why the M-19 comes with a stylish tool flask, keeping water and moisture out so rust doesn’t damage the beautifully minimalistic appearance. The tool flask also helps eliminate rattling and damage to the other items in your saddle bag, rucksack, or whatever your preferred riding luggage is. |
8/9/10/11/12 Speed Chain ToolOn a bike tour or bikepacking trip, you’re going to need a chain splitter, and that immediate rush of relief when you pull out your M19 and realize that Crank Brothers didn’t just throw this together is going to come over you like a cool breeze. The 17-4 ph stainless steel chain tool with 8/9/10/11/12 speed capabilities is always handy and works like a charm, whether you’re in your workshop or on the side of gloomy road. |

It comes with a hard case that is just barely bigger than the tool itself, which is nice as I keep mine next to a spare tube in my saddle bag. With the case I don't have to worry about the tool damaging my tube, but it's still extremely compact. All in all I'm very happy with this purchase.
I'd mistakenly tried to use the chainbreaker for a much larger chain that didn't quite fit and thought I cross threaded/stripped the "punch" in the process, but forcing it back on and giving it a good spin up and down got everything right again.
I went for a bumpy trail ride and opened my frame bag and this thing came out in pieces, but some red loctite and 3-in-1 and it's good as new.
This tool is essentially a simple machine, and if you maintain it (oil it every now and then) it will work forever. I don't know whether they sell individual "blades" should one strip out or break, but as I'd mentioned, I've been using mine for 4 years and no issues yet.
Only hiccup is the "flask" it comes with - the plastic caps are just about worthless. The top piece falls off constantly so the tool slips out. I use it without the flask.
Top quality! The only bicycle multi tool you'll need.
-The lock washers that are used to hold the thing together are the cut washer type which from an engineering standpoint literally do nothing once everything has been tightened. I supposed they could help in light of the next design flaw I will mention but in my case they didn't. It's truly astonishing that manufacturers have ever used these types of lock washers and completely insane that they continue to do so.
-The rods that threads through each end and are responsible for tying all the individual tools together are about 1/4" too short. This means that when you tighten it down you don't tighten against the rod, you tighten against all of the tools. The effect of this is that you can't really tighten them down an effective amount because the individual tools won't be able to swing out. They did put a small dab of blue threadlocker on it but it wasn't enough to prevent mine from falling apart.
I suggest that anyone who buys this disassembles it and puts a healthy helping of blue or maybe even red threadlocker on the threads. Once applying a bunch of threadlocker it seems to stay together enough for infrequent use. If you are someone who only has this for emergencies then I consider it a worthwhile tool for your pack. If you are planning on using this frequently then I suggest looking elsewhere.
I see a lot of complaints about rust but unfortunately that is the nature of things. Stainless would be too heavy (and softer), aluminum would be too soft, and titanium would be too expensive. I suppose there could be a better coating on it but in the end you just need to not let it sit around wet. Keeping it slightly oiled would also help.
